Just not a very good basketball team right now..

I guess it depends on your definition of a true PG. The comparison was made with Corey Beck in the discussion with LMHF. Beck was a very good passer and lock down defender, but he wasn’t the main scoring threat like a lot of PG’s are today. So anytime I read or hear someone say “true” PG, that’s what I think of. A person who can run/set up the offense, get other players involved, and attack the point on defense. Of that list you gave, Chioza would be the only one that fits that bill. Those other guys are good PG’s for their team and what they run for their team, but don’t exactly fit the description of a true PG.

That’s a pretty unrealistic generalization of Beard, and quite insulting. And nobody is looking ahead to next year. I haven’t heard that by fans in attendance of games for years. And the fact, that people are getting so upset with how conference play is going and the fact that the arena is sold out I believe for the rest of the season proves that notion to be false.

It’s the same old sad refrain from you. Everything anyone else says is wrong. Let’s talk in a couple weeks and see how your constant predictions of greatness have panned out. And in the meantime, continue to deny, deny, deny that we’re merely an average team that’s going nowhere.

I’ll address it…

  1. Like a lot of people here, I think you’re being too hard on Beard. You’re numbers are accurate(with a little creative rounding I might add), but shooting 38% isn’t terrible. It’s nothing to write home about, but it’s also far from unproductive. I still say he is a strong glue guy for the team. There have been quite a few games where we needed a bucket to either stop a run or ignite a run, and Beard was the man who did it. Those don’t show up in stats but it happens quite frequently. Also, to the point of him being “alone,” a lot of that has to do with the rotation or switches of our big men. When Gafford is in, he’s more athletic and able to come back and help Beard on defensive switches, when Thompson is out there, usually Beard is left on an island to fend for himself. So, it’s not necessarily all Beard’s issue. And I can’t honestly see where you think rebounds should be a knock on Beard. If you’re going to call out Beard, then you must call out Macon and Barford too for that. He’s the PG for goodness sake, is he suppose to lead the team in rebounds? The only major knock I have on Beard is his 3 point shooting and sometimes lack of passing to the open man. That missed pass to Jones for an easy layup against OSU had me saying curse words under my breath in the stands.

  2. I’d like to know what NBA experts you’re referring to because this is largely inaccurate. Macon, in terms of a pure player, is the best one we got. He shoots and drives better than anyone on our team. I mean, he leads the team in assists because he can dish the ball to different players. Same goes for the reason he gets to the line so much, because of he aggressive play.

  3. This is a classic case of remembering the bad but forgetting the good. If this was about the first 5 games of league play, I’d completely agree with you. But, the last 4 games, the trap has worked well a lot for us. The first half of the A&M game, the half court trap was causing all kinds of trouble for A&M. Ironically, it’s when we went to a short zone is where they started knocking down 3’s. Same goes for the MSU game. Steals maybe at 7, but we still account for 14 turnovers, while only accounting for 9 turnovers by us per game in league play. While the turnover numbers are down this year for us, our lack of turning the ball over is better than normal.

  4. This is true to some degree, but there are still a ton of teams that run a similar style and some are in this league(LSU and Bama) and some have won titles in the last 10 years(Louisville comes to mind). So to say it’s outdated, maybe to some degree it is, but it still works in a lot of ways and that’s why we haven’t had a losing season with this system.

  5. I agree, some of it is we leave guys open, and there’s no excuse for it. Other times, it’s just plain luck. A&M for example has been terrible at 3 this year, but for 3 minutes, they couldn’t miss. Does that make them magically a good 3 point shooting team and they’ll repeat that in the future? Or does it mean they just got hot at the right time? Think back to the Florida game. Kevaughn Allen, had been sucking it up in league play, then all of sudden goes off for 28 points, a lot of which were contested shots. Then he goes back into a slump and is barely scoring over 10 points a game. Fact is, some teams or players get lucky. Yes, you can call out the defense for allowing open shots sometimes, but you can just as easily say teams are getting lucky.

I don’t think from a statistical point, that even if we were to lose to LSU, we’d move outside the top 40 in RPI. We’d definitely be outside the top 30. Arkansas’ current RPI is 28 and LSU’s is 82. We might drop to 38, but it being a road game, I don’t see us dropping out of the top 30. In actuality, winning might still drop us out of the top 30, depending on what other teams do. But it helped us a lot that Georgia beat Florida earlier this week.

Before I get accused of arguing with you. Most of what you said had merit and I agree with a lot of it. I’m just pointing out there is a flip side to some of the points you were making.

First of all, you must have selective reading comprehension because I agree with some things people say. Lately, I’ve been agreeing more than disagreeing.

Constant predictions of greatness? Ok, start posting comments I’ve made about the all time greatness we’re having or have had. I posted we’re doing better than some of the naysayers are saying and we certainly are doing better than we have in a long time, but at no point have a I said we are a great team. I may say we have a great chance at x,y,z games or potential to end on a great note. But I challenge you to produce the claims you’re making.

And if we make the tourney, which I believe we still have a great chance at(there’s your great), I want you to come on here and apologize for that last comment oinkbait.

“There’s your great team”, if they do make the tournament?
General, if this quote is what you consider to be a great team I have to totally disagree.
Great teams not only get in the Tournament every year, but advance deep into the tournament as well.
We can’t mention a word like “Great” with the Razorback program thus far under Coach Anderson’s tenure since we don’t consistently get in the Tournament and have yet to advance past the first weekend. We have been one and done each time we’ve gotten in the Big Dance for 20 years now.
Your lack of realizing that there are multiple point guards in the SEC that play a traditional role and also score is short sided on your part, unfortunately we don’t have one in Beard. I feel comfortable in saying that he couldn’t start on 80% of the teams in The SEC. He should be a role player coming off the bench to give Barford, Macon and Jones a blow during the game at best.
And yes, there is no comparison between Beard and Beck.
Beck shot almost 50% from the field, 48% from three, just under 5 rebounds per game

Fair point on the consistency aspect of making the tournament. If we make it this year, then that’s 3 times making it out of the last 4 years. That’s a good stepping stone to making it consistently and maybe further.

We have not been one and done. In 15 we beat Wofford and advanced to play North Carolina. Last year we beat Seton Hall and advanced to play North Carolina. Seems our success of advancing involves not playing North Carolina in the second round.

Opinions are opinions on PG’s. I’m not debating that there aren’t good PG’s that also score, I’m simply stating the role of what people call the “true” PG is few and far between anymore. And I still disagree that Beard isn’t a good PG for us. Does he make mistakes and could do better? Absolutely, but he’s still a valuable member of this team.

I’m sorry, let me clarify what I meant by one and done.
We have been unable to win more than one game in the Tournament since 1997 or 98. Not getting out of the first weekend could never qualify a team as being great.

We simply don’t have the quality depth, speed and size on this current roster to be a great team, perhaps in a couple of years if Coach A can add a couple of 6’9 - 6’11 “MEN” to play alongside of Gafford and the other kids being brought in love up to the hype then maybe we will have something to be excited about.
That’s if Gafford stays for three seasons, which he probably should because even though he probably would get drafted, he’s long term success at the next level will be better if he stays in college and grows his game.

Go Hogs!

Deny, deny, deny. We are a completely average team that will be very lucky to get an 9th seed if any.

Get used to it as long as Anderson is the coach.

You may just be a troll Oinker. I have never seen a positive comment out of anything you have ever done!
Mike Anderson is a good coach! Look at his record and you might figure it out. The secret to to a deep run in the Dance is to earn a seed that avoids bad matchups. This hogs team never understood that aspect. Getting beat by Houston on the road. Coughing up a 6 point lead at Moo U and allowing them a 20% 3 point shooting team to tie the game with 3’s. Not showing up to play LSU at home. Playing just hard enough to pull out every SEC win they have. No sense of e urgency.
But to say it’s on the coach is simply not right! MA has integrity and does his recruiting the right way. He enforces standards and does the right thing! J Williams would have made a huge difference on last years team instead MA did the right thing. I’ll support the coach !

I like Mike. Good man. Runs a clean program. A lot like Bielema. Not enough wins.

2 d most wins in the SEC over the past 3 years and by the way a lot of progress.
Recruiting class looks good! The future is bright.

Army Hog,
Just need to correct you on Jacory Williams and the impact you said he would’ve had on last years team.
He wouldn’t have been playing last year if he hadn’t been released in the summer of 2015, instead he would have played his senior season at Arkansas in 2015-2016 instead of transferring to Middle Tennessee and sitting out that season and returning for what was his final year of eligibility in 2016-2017.
And quite frankly, we never saw Jacory play the type of ball in his three seasons at Arkansas that he displayed ay Middle Tennessee. Whose at fault for that, I don’t know, but it’s puzzling isn’t it?

Go Hogs!

Your right.
