Just not a very good basketball team right now..

Agreed

In SEC play Beard is shooting only 30%! Just like I spelled it out. So no I’m not wrong. You’re just one of those that can’t admit your faults.
All you gotta do is be like, sorry looked over that part. But to say I didn’t say something, which everyone can see I did, cause it’s posted in plain English, is just ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as Beards jumper!

I also said you didn’t make it clear, which you didn’t. If you meant overall and 3, I do apologize, but it didn’t look that way.

I couldn’t find any source that shows SEC play percentage from the general field and 3. So I did my own math from the stats.

Beard currently is shooting 27/81 from the field in SEC play for 34%
Beard currently is shooting 9/35 from 3 for 27%
Take the 3’s away and Beard is shooting 18/46 from the field for 40%

So we can both agree that Beard should stop shooting the 3 ball and focus on short jumpers and driving to the basket. Watch, I say that, and he’ll knock down 5-6 three pointers against LSU.

i too, am disappointed with the overall play of the hogs. we have spurts where we play like we can beat anyone by 20, and spurts were anyone can beat us by 20. last night, there were 2 spots in the game that proved critical to the outcome. early in the first half we were playing well and up 7 i believe when Beard drove the lane of a fast break, made the basket, but got called for a ridiculous charge call when the player was obviously moving and already under the goal. that prevented us from going up 10 and maybe putting the game out of reach. A&M then went on a little run, aided mostly by refs and rebounding. i know this should come as no surprise as reffing seems to get us every game.

the second spot was the aforementioned run in second half to cut it to 9. we then proceed to have a shot taken by both Thompson and Thomas, granted they were open shots, but do we really want those 2 shooting shots in those spots. if we had cut it to 5 and been able to put some pressure on them down stretch.

now i will be positive, it looks like Hall is going to be a good to great player if he gradually improves. his talent, athleticism and instincts are easily visible to me. i still believe we’ll finish 9-9 or 10-8 in SEC and will beat KY or Auburn at home, maybe both. and we will get one more road win at least.

We go into shooting slumps quite frequently, we went into one against LSU, and never got out of it. We went into one against GA, and there’s was worse. Our kids do not step up and knock down big shots consistently throughout the ENTIRE games, so that most CERTAINLY IS A POINT!! Whether you like it or not, that’s your issue.

The rebounding is about getting into position, blocking out, assuming every shot is a possible rebound, we’re not a good post team offensively or defensively.

I was embarrassed because we’re better than that, we’re a talented team. God has blessed us with talent, and when you don’t get the most of the gift God has given us, we’re stealing from God. I’m more than embarrassed, mortified, we’re better than that. i have no clue why you think the LSU game will be any different, our 3 pt defense and rebounding hasn’t improved much since then. Our defense is only slightly better. SC is a way more physical team, much like A&M, and Vandy is getting hot, they almost knocked off KY in Lexington last night, and just whooped a good TCU team, a TCU team that just manhandled Oklahoma state in their bldg last night.

We’re simply not a good club right now, we have a ton of talent, but they don’t all put it together at the same times, until they do, we will be lucky to win ANY remaining games, AND THAT’S A FACT!!!

Beard is neither as good as Coach A thinks he is or as bad as some of you think.

He’s about avg, his height doesn’t deter a lot of 3 pt shooters on defense, we desperately need taller guards, but he shoots okay. If he gets in rhythm, he’s above avg. A lot of these kids get hung up coming off the bench, (not necessarily Beard) what do they think will be happening in the NBA, you’re coming off the bench, if at all. NBA scouts judge the intensity to which you play with coming off the bench, and whether it’s maintained or not. Or whether you pout around because you’re not starting, getting enough mins, can be extremely detrimental in scouts eyes.

These kids for Arkansas need to utilize their rest breaks better, and come back out on the floor with a lot more energy, to make their depth advantageous.

You’re missing my point. We, as well as every team, goes into shooting slumps during the games. We’ve had a few games where we shot over 50% but still went into a slump at one point. It happens to everybody. So NO, it’s not that major of a point, it’s more situational issue.

I agree with you on rebounding.

I feel the way I do about LSU because of how bad they’ve played at home and how we’ve improved on the road. Yes, we have improved. SC is physical, but like Georgia, they struggle to score and we’re at home. Vandy lives and dies by the 3 ball, which does worry me a lot, but Gafford should have a field day with them. I’m talking he could put up 30 on them if he plays right and we feed him. TCU beat OSU, we beat OSU, winning is all that matters.

A shooting slump is 3 times down the floor in a row when you don’t score, when you’re consistently coming out of the locker room not ready to play, you’re not getting warmed up properly before games. For the most part that has been the case to start games, last night it was the case coming out from halftime, where we were literally blown off the planet. We need to do a better job of getting warmed up before games and coming back from halftime. Need to hit a min of (3) 3’s, (5) lay up’s, and a couple FT’s, coming out from the breaks. Put the ego on the sidelines, and stick to the fundamentals.

And dude, I know this game, I’ve routinely coached a bunch of 7th graders to championships, against teams with mostly two yr starter 8th graders. I know what I’m talking about.

Every game is different, I can promise you if the Hogs take that attitude of yours into Baton Rouge, it’s a guaranteed loss. You play with a chip on your shoulder, and you assume your opponent is Lebron James every week. Anything less than that means, you’re not ready, and should stay home. You know SC just dominated FL right? I can guarantee you that coach means business, we will be lucky to win that game, where ever we play. Look dude, we’re not good at anything, we can be, but it’s not consistent. if you think you’re going to win, you already have 2 strikes against you. You think past no further than every possession, that’s how far you think in this game. if you think about ANYTHING other than every possession, you already have two strikes against you.

SMH!

I don’t care how many 7th graders you’ve coached. I’ve played, coached and officiated basketball for over a decade, so I know a thing about the game myself.

My attitude? You mean confidence in looking at every angle of the game. If our own fans can be pessimistic about struggles on the road, I can certainly be optimistic about our opponents latest struggles. That’s not looking past LSU or underestimating them. I can list all the categories that we statistically are better than them, but I mentioned strictly my gut feeling, not just the facts. My opinion and I’m sticking to it. And who cares that SC beat Florida? Georgia just beat Florida at Georgia and we beat Georgia at Georgia. That means nothing when we play SC here at home. Confidence to win is a strike? SMH!

I’m tired of hearing about the “Fastest 40 Minutes” and Arkansas being said in the same sentence because it’s totally false.
That’s quite simply not an accurate assessment of this basketball team. Take a look at our points per game since conference play began as well as in our losses for the most part and it’s quite telling.
We’ve only reached the 90 point mark in two games one that went to overtime with Tennessee at Home and Ole Miss at Home. It took two overtime’s to reach 80 points at Georgia. We won all three of those games, but many other games we didn’t reach 70 points.
It’s simple, we don’t have the overall quality depth on this roster to do what most would like to see the Hogs do on a regular basis.
We lack quality depth in the post and especially at power forward. We really don’t have a high enough quality point gaurd to force tempo with on court speed, quickness and be a lock defender.
Most teams around the country actually start their best five players and give them the bulk of the minutes and I don’t believe we are doing that at this time.
In my opinion the starting five should be Barford at PG, Macon at SG, Hall at SF, Gafford at PF and Thompson at C.
Since we aren’t able to play the uptempo style then the current 3 gaurd scheme isn’t doing us any good, so simply get the best five on the floor from the start and substitute from that point with regard to foul problems and a blow when needed.
Beard can come in and give Barford some rest each half and CJ can do the same for Macon. Thomas, Cook and Bailey could provide the same rest for the forwards and Center positions.
I believe that this lineup would provide us many more options in a half court game while still being able to push the ball when the opportunities arise.
Just my opinion and thought because what we’ve been seeing I don’t believe will get us very far against quality opponents.

Go Hogs!

I’ve played and coached myself, big deal… You remind me of when we predicted our second team was better than some other team’s first team in 1994, ended up losing badly to UMASS and UCLA that yr. Stupid is never learning from the same mistakes, and my home state has it’s fair share of stupid people. When I’m out Uber’ ing and Lyft’ ing here in S. FL, I keep a .45 next to me, a taser to the left of me, a PR-24 under the seat, and an ASP baton in the glove box. Do I tell anyone I have these things? Nope, because if I have to use it, I don’t want them to know it’s coming. Translation; if you really did know anything to that which you advocate, you would realize talking smack is rat poison, especially when we pretty much suck to begin with.

The biggest problems with the Anderson Era teams is his almost unwillingness to recruit a true point guard to run the offense and pressure the opposing point guard. Another frustrating point I have with Anderson has been only willing to recruit ONE good post player and the rest just court filler. Now with this incoming class and the commitment of Justice Hill, hopefully these problems will finally be addressed. I just truly don’t understand this almost stubbornness on Anderson’s part not to recruit point guards and post players. Nolan’s and Anderson’s best teams ALWAYS had a strong point guards (Corey Beck) and dominating post players (Corliss). I don’t buy the line that Dudley tries to push every so often that these players are few and far between. Almost everyone in the SEC can find them. With these new incoming players over the next few years, Anderson has no excuses not to take this team to the next level.

Most of this isn’t accurate.

It’s true that Anderson likes to recruit multi-dimensional players at all positions, including PG, but he did recruit Jabril Durham who was the definition of a true PG. He also got Fred Gulley who was an ok PG for us, but still more a PG than SG. We also have Jalen Harris who will be eligible to play next year and he’s a true PG.

The big man opinion is partially true depending on your definition of “good.” He did recruit Moses Kingsley and Bobby Portis in the same class, and both were very good for us. Anderson likes to the have the two unit rotation when it comes to be big men, which is why we usually only have two. Now next year, I am worried that we will only have ONE true big man on campus, Daniel Gafford. When Reggie Perry decommited, that put a big dent in our big man rotation for next year. We’ve got 2 very good PF coming, but not true big man.

And Dudley is right, they are hard to come by. To be honest, true PG largely don’t exist anymore. Look at our league and tell me who you would say is a true PG. There might be one, but I honestly can’t think of one. As for big men, Tennessee has 2 big men who rarely play. Florida has only 1 true big man. SC only has one good big man in Silva. Vandy only has one that plays any meaningful minutes. Georgia only has one, and he’s average at best(I’m talking about Claxton, not Maten). So it’s not just us.

I disagree with you on point guard play General. Look at the point guards at Florida, Miss. State, LSU, and at other programs.
Yes they now do more than distribute the ball and lock down the other teams point guards, but those aspects are still just as important today as it was a few years ago. During the teams current play, assists are down, turnovers are up, and opposing point guards are shredding the teams press and finding the open shooter or finding the open post for an easy basket. If memory serves, Anderson’s point guards seldom did most aspects that traditional PGs do.As I mentioned in my prior post, hopefully thses problems will be addressed with the new class and with Hill in a couple of years. I also have hope for more help on the interior with the incoming class. Don’t get me wrong. I like Anderson and hope he retires as the teams Headcoach. I just want to watch the team take the next step and get back to the Sweet 16 and beyond.

General says he can’t think of one true point gaurd in the SEC this season.

Well, let’s take a look around the league.
Alabama - Sexton
Florida - Chioza
Vanderbilt - Lachance
LSU - Waters
Kentucky - Gilgeous-Alexander and Green
Miss. St. - N. Witherspoon

Gosh, those are seven pretty darn good true point guards that I was able to come up with and not even do any deep research and I didn’t even Include Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina and Missouri because off the top off my head I just can’t name their PG’s.
As for the depth of size on this roster, it hurts us tremendously.
Nolan didn’t get it done until he got those two 6’11 Freshman Wilson and Robinson on the roster alongside of Corliss to eat glass. That’s just the fact of the matter, period!
Coach Anderson has seen the blueprint, now all he needs to do is go and get himself some “MEN” just as UNLV star Larry Johnson told Nolan during the game at BWA during the May, Day, Miller era.

Go Hogs!

He is coaches “Pet”. Mike sees himself in him. A little tough guy, hanging out with the big boys. Mike does not see his lack of production and liabilities he causes in defense. Nothing is going to change until he graduates. I understand we have some talented guards are coming. We always look to the future, that has been the Razorback way the past nearly 20 years.

The numbers tell the truth and the numbers … well … they haven’t changed much this year nor during Coach Anderson’s time with the Hogs.

Thoughts to comments on this thread (if you care to read

  1. agree - Anton brings little to the game. He isn’t defensive-oriented (he tends to switch too easily which leaves him out of position). His plus-contributions on the offensive end are minimal (shooting at a .377 clip - ugh). Third most minutes, third most shots - worst shooting percentage. That says something (it says let Barford have his points and let Macon stand out there on the edge and pass the ball) = no one else will answer offensively. Anton plays 30 minutes a game and gets less than 3 boards a game. He doesn’t average a steal per game (notable stat!!). Most important observation is that he is routinely ‘alone’ … meaning he’s lost his man and hasn’t aggressively picked up someone else. Not much production for a 30-minutes-a-game guy at this level.

  2. I like Macon’s offensive game - methodical as it is. Problem is (and noted on a recent NBA ‘draft’ discussion), he spends most of his time 25 feet from the rim with no real purpose. When he decides he has to get offensive, he’s capable of shooting. Its not his nature though and the scouts (and other coaches) have discovered that. That is going to hurt him come NBA time. He doesn’t have a drive and dish game (at all) … which means he doesn’t get into the paint (only 6 offensive rebounds in 686 minutes of game time!). Guards in the NBA don’t live 25 feet from the rim. Interesting that he leads the team in trips to the charity stripe with the majority of those coming in the 2nd half of games. That tells me he gets offensive late in games and teams THEN have to defend him.

  3. While the Hogs have pulled back on the full court ‘press’ lately and played a more aggressive half-court trapping scheme, it still does not work. We’ve all seen it - the scheme doesn’t allow for the players to attack the boards - their backs are to the boards most of the time, well away from the rim, and they routinely get disconnected from their assignment. With all the ‘trapping’, Hogs are getting less than 7 steals a game and 35 rebounds a game. Neither is a number that positions them to win given the style they claim they want to play.

  4. To my Army Service Brother who observed that Mike coached on the winning team(s) of Coach Richardson, I’ll offer this - times have changed. Everyone has athletes now and the style Coach Anderson would have Arkansas play doesn’t work in today’s game against teams with good ball handlers and good team speed (aka Auburn, Alabama, etc). We’ve seen Coach A pull back from the full court chasing the rock defense but then they get frantic in their half-court traps and most teams have learned - just keep moving the ball and within 15 seconds or so you’ll have Arkansas in a knot with shooters open.

  5. to the point that the numbers don’t lie, you only have to ask why most teams (close to all teams this year) come into an Arkansas game with the intent to spot up on the three-point line. When even TAMU can get that done (see the 2nd half start from Tuesday night), there is something in the Arkansas scheme that other coaches can see and they go after it. All but one team in SEC play against the Hogs this year have hit from the field higher than their season averages. That number says something about your defensive scheme.

Must Win at LSU to keep Arkansas from moving outside the top 40 RPI. As it stands, 11 wins in conference keeps them with an RPI high enough to Dance. A loss at LSU puts them behind the 8-ball for the first time this year. Once you get behind the 8 ball … you have to do extraordinary things to recover. Stay in front of that 40 RPI line!

Distant Hog, you nailed it. It would be a tragedy if his senior laden team doesn’t make the dance. If it doesn’t, the spotlight will be on Anderson’s coaching ability. I know he’s a great person and runs a sound program. If we can’t beat a depleted LSU team, I don’t have a good feeling about our future.
