While I’d rather seen him go to Florida State, he is still likely a one-and-done at Mississippi State and Starkville is much closer to his home than Fayetteville. If he is one-and-done, the Hogs will only play him twice (perhaps a third time in SEC Tournament and an unlikely fourth time in the NCAA Tournament). Let’s move on and find a recruit to replace him.
I can only comment on what he said so it’s not conjecture! He didn’t want to sign with us because he wanted to be closer to his dad. Then he commits to MSU and says he wanted to play where his dad played. Apparently distance is no longer an issue! I don’t mind if he flipped because he wanted to play where his dad played but apparently honesty is lacking with this kid!
Never said anything about traveling by mule trains and didn’t realize driving on an interstate is the same thing as traveling by mule train. If it is, then traveling by mule train isn’t obsolete after all because that’s the way a whole lot of people get from one destination to another. The point was whether they walk, drive, fly or use a rocket, it’s still a shorter distance. Whether that had anything to do with the decision is not for me to answer, but for the family. And you can choose to believe it or not; only they know for certain.
If the decision was purely about being close to his ill father he would have chosen Florida State which is 45mins from his house not Starkville which is 7hrs. I’m fine with the kid deciding another school is better for him however the reason given is a complete lie.
He did what ever kid that age does he made a bad decision and it won’t be his last. We should know by now and act accordingly that being committed today means nothing tomorrow in many cases and this is one of those cases. Let’s wish him the best and move on, let’s not expect more from kids than we should. WPS
These guys got me confused, I really thought highly of the family when the mom and dad made their statement. Then came the decommittment and I thought oh well maybe he will go to a school close to home I totally understood . Now today he announces that he’s committing to Piss State well needless to say I lost all respect. It will come a time that the parents will have to let the young man know that his word is his bond. Just don’t say anything or do anything until you are 100% sure, at least Marcus and Malik got that one right.
First, if dad is “really sick,” I completely understand the decision to go to MSU as a legacy. As I said in a few other threads, it makes sense that a kid would honor his father by going to his old alma mater and wearing his old number (don’t know about this yet, we will see).
Second, I have a medical issue. I live about 6 hrs from Fayetteville and can’t make the drive. Last year, there was a game on here and I won tickets to two different football games and had to turn them down (whoever got them you’re welcome). I’m not considered life and death sick, which is what I got from the “dad being sick” story. 7 hrs is still too far away for me, and if dad is sicker how will they make it back and forth. As Dawg said, FSU was 45 mins away, I can make that.
Agreed…as I have said I have absolutely no problem with this kid deciding another school is better for him. A football recruit Ryder Anderson decommitted late a few years ago and signed with Ole Miss but he made no pretext of going for some BS reason. The kid decided he wanted to go to Ole Miss, fair enough. Perry and his family make it like it’s about his father and being close due to his illness…ok…whatever. If it is about his fathers last wish is to see his son play for his alma mater then that makes sense and I completely support that decision but that has never been said.
I agree with all of you but I will say It doesn’t make much sense to me why draw it out why even play in arkansas for aau if your dad is sick stay close to home period but it’s a done deal wish him luck and hope his dad is going to be ok
the way i see it, Reggie just made two mistakes. first by committing so early to the Hogs, i assume he got caught up in all the Hawks players going to same school and that being the first time it was ever done. then he blows up on the AAU circuit and everyone telling him how good he is, so im sure he starts thinking did i make the right decision. to me, you cant blame a kid for making a simple mistake which i think this is.
the second mistake was how he decommitted and the story used as a reason. it does seem fabricated now that sickness is the driving force, as Starkville isnt really close to his home. i agree with those of you who could stomach the reason for going to ms st. as being a tribute to his dad for being a good player there. if he’d of simply said that in the beginning i doubt there would have been any blowback.
i hope the kid becomes a great college and nba player, though i wish he wouldnt of picked a squad we play so often. as an aside, i dont like seeing the best players in our state going to colleges in the SEC, they never go to some team we rarely play like Duke, Michigan State, Indiana, UNC, etc. im happy to see that MA has been signing the best in the next few classes. the hogs best teams are always driven by in-state talent being the best players and being supplemented by players from places like Memphis, Tulsa, St. Louis and so on.
good luck to hogs this season and good luck to Reggie, tho i haope the hogs crush ms st.
In my line of work, I cross paths with many coaches and teams at the college and pro levels in the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati/SE Indiana Tri-State area.
This morning, I talked with a Head Coach of one the areas Universities as he was on his way to Las Vegas to watch some AAU basketball for a couple of days.
I wished him luck and hopefully he could land and good player for his program.
I briefly mentioned the Reggie Perry situation and his decommitment with what was told to all the world his father’s health issues and wanting to stay closer to home.
He was well aware of the player and the situation and said that we don’t even want to know what happened, and said didn’t he go ahead and sign with Mississippi State? Not so close to home and certainly no easy place to travel to by air.
He said that the kid probably wanted to play at Arkansas, but others intervened and that was the end of that.
Arkansas got the screws put to it on this recruit and family and that’s the bottom line.
sadly, in this day and time thats very plausible. for Reggie’s sake i hope thats not the case, and the he had some input in the commitment to MSST. it wont be a good situation for him if thats true, if so he’ll definitely be 1 and done. does anyone know if we plan on adding someone in his place?
WHS reported our coaches looking at a JUCO big man named Matthew Horton. I don’t know his star rating(and in most cases don’t care) but he’s got an impressive list of schools looking at him. My guess is he’s the guy to possibly replace Perry.
You are committed (strongly if you believe his words and his mother was always tweeting positive as well) but you go from committed to a school for almost a year but decommit and commit to another school (same conference, same division) in a couple of weeks…something sounds funny about this
