People like you keep saying BP didn’t have a defense. It was much better than the crap we have now. You don’t win 10+ games 2 years in a row with no defense. Now, was it Bama heck no. never will be. But his offense was way more explosive. His special teams had guys that could take it to the house. He had a kicker as well. I don’t know why people like you hate on BP and post these none factual opinions on here. When have we ever had a close game to teams like Toledo and La Tech and Texas Tech under him??? I am waiting. Sure we didn’t beat LSU and Bama. But if that’s anyone’s only argument I would take those loses and the rest wins every year. We wouldn’t be playing in a toilet bowl every year. BB has done nothing at Arkansas. The last time we were ranked he blew it and we lost to Toledo. Let’s see if he blows it again against Texas St. And NOW he has got Louisville knocking at the door of greatness with a Heisman hopeful.
I beg to differ. We immediately became infinitely better off as soon as Hot Wheels Bobby packed up his unnatural hot babe wheeliie antics and inclinations and cycled off into the sunset away from The Natural State. We now have a head football coach and gentleman that we can be proud of in every way; on and off the field. If you are truly still so enamored of Petrino, then arrange to crow-hop around the succeeding round robin collegiate venues in his wake. I wish you joy of him.
Petrino won a Cotton Bowl. He then took the Razorback program by scandal to a 70 year low football record and made it the laughingstock of the college football world. Goofy pictures of him in neck braces and his ugly mug along side young swimsuit models were also included for laughs. I can not say on these boards where you people can stick him.
Houston Dale Nutt had us at #4 in the McFadden years. He also won 2 SEC west titles. He beat Bama too. I would argue that Nutt/Malzahn’s team was much more fun to watch because we played defense in those days. P train is known for 2 things. Ask anybody. 1. A great offensive mind. 2. Being a scumbag.
As for coaching, you are what your record says you are. I also think where you peak in a particular year is much less relevant than where you finish. Our highest AP finishes under HDN were 16 and 17 in his first two years here, then 15 in his next to last year. No top 25 finish in the other 7 years. CBP had us at 12, and 5 in his last 2 years respectively. Nothing in the first 2 after taking a down program from HDN, but trending up. I can’t follow your argument that Nutt’s teams were more fun to watch. At least not from a “success/failure” perspective. Also, does anyone believe the Bama that Nutt beat is the Bama we play today? HDN was at OM 4 years. His highest finishes were 14, and 20, and trending down again. He didn’t beat “this” Bama team while there.
Actually, he didn’t take us to that record. John L did. I doubt we would have finished in the top 5 had CBP stayed, but our team was much more talented than 4-8. More like 8-4, and CBP has a reputation (based on rankings at the time the games are played) for winning 2 games per year that he was picked to lose.
The John L decision was JL’s. It was a horrible time to hire a new coach, and his options were limited. He did have the opportunity to hire Phil Fulmer as an interim, but passed. Fulmer wanted a guarantee of 2 years rather than 1, and wasn’t willing to keep CBP’s staff. He wanted to go to battle with his own people. I would rather have CBB now, but Fulmer was the much better option than John L. That “crap sandwich” is on Long.
First, a disclosure, I was a HUGE BP fan. I didn’t want him fired (did I let me love of winning override my moral compass, maybe)
That being said, I would NEVER, EVER go as far as this poster did about “morals don’t matter, just win baby.” Morals do matter, Moral leadership does matter. However, no one is perfect, everyone makes mistakes, sometimes HUGE ones, it doesn’t mean you are worthless (See King David from the Old Testament please).
OK, as to Bobby: He is a great coach. I believe with all my heart that if he had stayed he would have addressed, to some extent, defense. Would offense come first? Sure. But he would have addressed defense. As I said, I wanted him to stay. Does that mean morals don’t matter? NO. I am a Christian. Morals and good moral leadership do in fact mean a lot to me. That being said, history is full of good men who messed up and had an affair. Does that make it OK? NO NO and NO. Having an affair (with who it was was way over blown, UofA was not going to get sued by anyone OTHER than the girl who he had an affair with (and UofA did pay her off)) was stupid. It was a huge negative. But I was willing to give him a second chance (and at UofA this would have been his second chance, not his 3rd or 4th).
NOW, after the fact several things have come out that make me rethink that. (1) He acted so bad at the Cotton Bowl that apparently the Cotton Bowl officials told UofA we would not be invited back as long as he was the coach. (2) Recruiting. Apparently he hated it so bad that he would go to a city to “recruit” and not even visit the high schools. Apparently he visited a total of 4 high schools in Arkansas the whole time he was here. Totally unacceptable.
There were a few other things (forgotten them now) that came out after the fact.
Those things make me think we are better off with out him.
One last caveat, why did the bad stuff only come out after the fact? If that was true about recruiting, shouldn’t that have been said during the time decisions were being made to keep him or not? This info comes from Insiders. But at the time the decision was being made, none of this was discussed (not even a hint of it that I recall). I remember a post (I think the day of the decision) saying something to the effect of “no one wants anyone to be fired.” The Cotton Bowl stuff and the failure to recruit (not talking failure of results in recruiting, but effort) should have been discussed at the time.
Can some of you remember what a mess Petrino left our program? Walk on OL, no QB and no defense. We were in the same shape as if we had been on probation. He was getting blown out by Bama and LSU but beating the other SEC weaklings. Even our own players were telling recruits to think twice before committing! Our APR was in the low 900’s and we were not respected. We are in a much better situation with Bielema with building this team slowly but correctly. In the log run we will be able to sustain success and be relevant nationally for many years!
