I had a previously-scheduled interview with Hunter Yurachek this morning and I asked him about Mike Anderson being hired at St. John’s. This is what he said:
“I’m first and foremost happy for Mike and Marcheita and their family, and the coaches that were left behind that he may take with him; I can’t confirm that, but I assume he may. St. John’s is a program that has had a rich and storied tradition with Lou Carnesecca and what they did in the early days of the Big East. It’s a great opportunity for him and I’m really happy for him landing on his feet that quickly.”
I read an article on CBSSports.com about the Anderson hiring. St. John’s coaching search was a cluster, and they offered about 4-5 other guys before hiring Mike, including Bobby Hurley and Porter Moser. Anderson’s hire was done in less than 24 hours, per the article. It is a strange hire…a fish out of water so to speak. He is a good coach in a very different environment than he has ever been in. Go get 'em Mike…
Mike said he was first contacted Wednesday. He flew to New York yesterday and the deal was done by last night. From the first call to the press release was less than 48 hours.
I read that same article (link below). I just hope the infamous NY media gives Mike a chance and doesn’t turn on him before he gets started just because he’s associated with an unusual coaching search.
That is what the article said, not me. In any event, it was a whirlwind hire…going from sitting at home to deciding to move to New York in a couple of days…that is not an easy thing to do. It is an odd fit, but it may work out well. It may not. The New York press won’t be as gracious or as patient as the press in Arkansas. He better hit the ground firing on all cylinders.
I’d say you are right. Mike’s hiring didn’t make any of the listed 10 headlines for Friday Sports in the NY Times. Probably the only NY Times Sports headlines for St Johns, would be a run to the final four or an NIT championship in MSG for the Red Storm.
He was scheduled to be in New York before he was contacted by St John’s to watch his nephew DeMarre Carroll play a NBA Playoff game. Carroll plays for Brooklyn Nets…
