MO looked totally inept against TN. They looked unbeatable against the Hogs. First half tonight were routing MS St. Came out 2nd half and forgot how to play basketball. 2 min left in 2nd half and MO been outscored 44 to 17 and now down 12.
Just don’t think we were going to win our first three games and if we were gonna go 2-1 I’d prefer it against AU and TN. So hopefully the loss to MO sets us up for our second road win tonight. I think the smith decision just came so late in the prep week that no one could focus and regroup. Think that has now happened. Having your head right is the first battle regardless of the players on the floor.
I have been saying that SEC is going to be a dogfight. Arkansas is one of the teams that has least experienced SEC players and we are one of the least athletic teams in the conference. Wonder how it is going to all play out.
Not something I ever thought I would read about a Hog basketball team.
As I have gotten older, I watch less and less sports on TV (in my 20’s and 30’s I would schedule my life around the basketball games on TV). I realized after reading your comment that I had no idea if that was true or not (don’t take me wrong, I am sure your statement is correct, it just hit me that I know less about the Hog team and other SEC teams than ever in my lifetime). Back in day. I knew all about not only all our players, their strengths, their weaknesses, but also a whole lot about every other team in the SWC or later the SEC.
Corliss - great college BB player, great feet, great posting up. Not real athletic, not a high flyer.
Thurman - great shooter, huge BB smarts, great clutch player, Not athletic
Beck - tough as nails, team leader, not a high flyer.
All great defenders, tough on the court, and tough minded, but not overly athletic. Had some nice pieces that were athletic, but our leaders were not as athletic as many in our conference. However, we beat them like a drum for 3 years!
Very true. This team will have to have some of what that team had. Not sure if that is possible this year. That is why I think we will have to outshoot most of the opposition, probably from the three point line. And we can do that like we did at Auburn,
I agree. I think we have 2 players that fit that mold in Desi and Tate. I believe they could both play for Nolan. I think Smith is on the edge of it, but in an understated way. You can’t get 27 rebounds in a 2 game stretch without some toughness. He just doesn’t let his emotions show it. Smith is built much like Corliss, but unfortunately doesn’t have those natural basketball skills that Corliss had.
I’m not saying that this team is even in the same area code as our National championship team. I’m saying that you can add a player like Corliss and have a final four contender with the pieces on this team. I know, very difficult to sign a National HS player of the year like Corliss was. Main thing I’m trying to say is you don’t have to have great athleticism on a team to win big in college basketball.
I was thinking about some “what ifs” with this team:
Add Joe and Jones to this team and imagine what we would have. Quite possibly an SEC championship and a 1 or 2 seed. And, at one point we thought they might both be back.
Tate - PG
Joe - SG
Moody - SF
Mason - PF/WPG-GTG
Smith - PF
Desi - 6th man of the yr
Notae - instant offense & 2nd GTG
Vanover/Jackson - Height when needed
We’d still be a good rebounding team, even though small. Mason led us in rebounding last year.
Couldn’t disagree more. Our athleticism is right on point with other top teams in the league. Some of our current issues have been addressed for days, but one thing I wonder is “who is the guy?” Who is the guy that is going to get us a bucket to start or end a run? Who is the guy who is going to take the winning shot? Who is the guy who is going to take that charge to destroy the other teams rythmn? Right now I don’t see a single guy who fits that bill. Joe and Jones were the two last year. In my personal opinion, Moody and Notae need to be the guys to step up and fill that role. Other guys can do it, but those two I believe have the tools to do it on a consistent basis.
Any team looks unbeatable when YOU shoot under 30% from the field and miss a dozen or more point-blank shots on goal.
We hit 43-45% of our shots and we win by double digits. Just “one of those games” offensively. Will worry if it becomes a trend, which I don’t believe it will.
