What did this DVH quote mean?

He said: “I feel like it slipped away a little bit with the upperclassmen, and we’re going to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

I took it to mean he stuck with them too long last year?

I took it to mean the upperclassmen didn’t perform to the level they expected last year.

Here was the full quote, from my notes:

“Some good things came out of it, honestly. Around here we plan on playing for a while, so we learned a lot from it, to be honest with you. We learned a lot about making sure, maybe, some older kids come in with the right attitude. I feel like it slipped away a little bit with the upperclassmen, and we’re going to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
