I took it to mean the upperclassmen didn’t perform to the level they expected last year.

“Some good things came out of it, honestly. Around here we plan on playing for a while, so we learned a lot from it, to be honest with you. We learned a lot about making sure, maybe, some older kids come in with the right attitude.
