So, what if Cole Hedlund is the best kicker in practice this week and before the game? My friend says, “It makes no difference. Hedlund is done.” Okay, well…if that’s the case, has he been kicked off of the team? Does he keep his scholarship? Does he have to practice even if not allowed to play? Can he get a redshirt this year? Can he freely move to another school? If he will never be used again and is taking up a scholarship spot on the team, I need a few answers coach. In the NFL you just show a guy the door.
You don’t kick a guy off the team just because you bench him, although it is conceivable that he would quit the team. Nor do you take him off scholarship at this point. I’m sure that if nothing changes he will be transferring in January which would take himself off scholarship. If he is still on the team then he’ll practice, just on the off-chance that Limpert, Mazza and everybody else get hurt and he has to kick. He’s already used his redshirt year as a true freshman. Since he’s already redshirted he would lose a year if he goes to another FBS school so I suspect he would transfer down to FCS or Division II
I think that your friend is right. Hedlund has been the best kicker in practice for the last two years. Then he gets in games and gets the yips. It happens. That said, it is time to move on. As noted, he has already red-shirted.
No idea where he is school-wise, but if he graduates early he wouldn’t have to go down a division.
He may not have to go down a division, but he needs to. The pressure of kicking in front of 5-10 thousand folks is a lotless than kicking in front of 70-90 K.

[/quote]Well then he needs to make sure he gets his degree because the NFL won’t be an option.
And he might go down, put it all together and be ready to kick for a long time in the NFL. You just never know how the mind of a kicker.

Yips are the yips 5K or 70K
Well, I’m just curious because I have never heard a coach say, “…we aren’t goin’ down that road again” which so emphatically says, “Cole will not be kicking for us ever again.” I guess the best way to put it is: If I was Cole, what are my options right now?
I’m sure the future of Cole Hedlund has been discussed between him, coach & family. Whether it be here or elsewhere, one thing for sure he will not be totally abandoned by our coach.
I’m pretty sure he’ll transfer to OSU and move on to the Cowboys and make a lot of dough.

At this moment his options are quit or stick it out. After the season he will have more options which will likely involve a new school
I figure Cole will have his degree soon. It’s hard not to graduate in three years if you are in summer school. He’s a good student. This will take care of itself.
One of the strangest things about Cole is that he played in front of big crowds in Texas - in the 20,000 range - but it has not translate with consistency on the college level
