Matt Hobbs did not seem pleased with his pitchers as he gave a pretty animated speech afterward. This was the second rough outing for Zack Morris, who has been facing the more potent of the two lineups. If I recall correctly, he had a tough start last season but turned things around in April.

On the other hand, Nate Thompson said this was the best day the lineup has had so far this preseason. I’ll have some more of his thoughts in a story coming soon.

I was impressed with how Cody Adcock pitched. I sat behind the plate and you could see some real movement on his pitches. I like the way he competes. He retired the final seven batters he faced and got an attaboy from Hobbs on his way off the field.

Brady Slavens moved to third base midway through the scrimmage and made a couple of really good defensive plays there on back-to-back pitches.

Kendall Diggs made a great running catch in right field in the final inning, but the home plate umpire ruled he did not complete the catch. To me it looked like Diggs caught the ball and dropped it on the transfer to his throwing hand.

Shortstop John Bolton made a great defensive play to rob Mason Neville of a hit early in the scrimmage.

Brady Slavens and Caleb Cali each had three-run home runs, and Slavens and Jared Wegner went back-to-back against Parker Coil. Harold Coll had a solo home run for the losing team.

Peyton Stovall was nursing a sore ankle and did not run when he reached base. I don’t think it’s serious. He played in the field.

Hudson Polk played good defense behind the plate. He threw out Diggs trying to steal third base and back picked Jayson Jones when a hitter failed to make contact on a bunt attempt.

Great report. Thanks!

Is the transfer C from New Mexico still on the roster?

Yes, his name is Cal Kilgore, from New Mexico State. He is the emergency catcher.

I don’t have any idea what’s going on with Morris but he has not had a quality outing in the fall or so far… that has to change!! He has been getting hammered.

Good news on Adcock though, we need him to be able to be an impact player for us

Here is more from today:

Great Job Matt. Glad to see us have some success against LH. I do like the lineup having some good RH hitters in there to balance it out.

I believe Dave is giving Slavens some opportunities over at 3rd and he seems to be performing very well. I have heard Cali is an excellent 1b. Might be something that ends up being more than experiment

It seems like this years hogs are capable and able to hit lefties. I think Morris will get better as the temp goes up.

Yeah I sure hope he can rebound the form he had last year… we really need him to be an impact arm.

Keep in mind that these hitters know the pitchers really well by now. Morris may fare better against a lineup that doesn’t see him every time he pitches.

I’m sure he’ll have a long leash because of how well he pitched last season.

Yeah I find it hard to believe a guy that is dominant as he was last year will not have success again this year… I sure hope he has the same type of year.

DVH said today that Kilgore is injured and will redshirt.

Any idea who the emergency catcher is now?

Several on the squad have probably played the position.

Just wondering who the would turn to.

Do the Hogs need an emergency catcher since # 1 and # 2 are healthy? They can grab a position player who isn’t playing that day and have him catch bullpen during the game.

I agree. Just wonder who would catch if the top 2 catchers get injured. Very possible scenario.

I’ll need to check my recording, but I thought I heard him say Kilgore might redshirt. I’ll check into it when I get a chance the next time.

I’m told that should Kilgore be unavailable and a catcher is needed past Polk and Rowland, an infielder who has quick hands would probably be called upon. I don’t know who that would be; probably just whoever is available. There is not another player who practices behind the plate.

I would not be surprised if Kilgore was on the 36-man roster this season even if the plan was for him to redshirt.
