Track speed vs. football speed (Facebook video)

Tennessee currently has the fastest sprinter in the NCAA ranks, Christian Coleman. So with the NFL Draft and talk about 40 times, they asked Coleman to run a 40 as though he were at the NFL Combine. Here’s how he did (remember that Usain Bolt and others are even faster):

Wow. I would think that turf would be a slightly slower surface than a track.

It is. And he doesn’t have a starting block as he would in track. However, he’s not being timed in the same way as he would in track either. As I understand it, the device for the 40 starts the timer on first movement and stops when he hits the line. In track the timer starts when the gun is fired, and most sprinters take a tenth of a second or two to react to the gun.
