Hearing that Ole Miss is going to make a run at him but also TN is looking at him as well…if they can get over their delusion they are going to get Gruden.
He’d take Arkansas over Ole Miss all day long. Tennessee? That will be interesting.
Mike Norvell will have to make a tough decision. Lots of things to think about in picking one of those schools. Do you want something close to the death penalty to deal with over the next few years (almost zero room for area in managing your scholarships)? And do you want to be in the East or the West side of the SEC? The East has definitely been easier. Whether or not it stays that way with Florida struggling is anyone’s guess. And, will Auburn be in the East or the West? Maybe that is not on the table yet, but it might be soon.
I can’t imagine Mike Norvell choosing to coach at Ole Miss. The NCAA hammer is expected to drop this Friday. Another year or two of bowl bans and 30+ scholarship losses are expected for the widespread cheating. No young stud coach will select a situation like that. He would be hamstrung for 6 -8 years, at least. See USC.
Tennessee or Arkansas would be likely destinations. I hope we don’t blow this deal like we have in the past with Jimmy Johnson, Tommy Tuberville and Gus Malzahn. Does anybody here think Gus would not have been better than 11-26 in the SEC? I think he would have done well, but we will never know.
Anyway, it is time to look to the future of the program. Jeff Long is on the clock. Tick, tick, tick…
The other side of that, from an up and coming coach’s perspective, is that there will be far less pressure to win for 3 or 4 years than would otherwise be the case, though both the new coach and AD would offer protestations to the contrary (“I came here to win”). In the mean time, the coach comes in and doubles (or more) his salary, and he’s in the premier conference in the country.
That’s attractive to some coaches.
If things don’t work out after 4 or 5 years, he’s set for life financially (or should be), and a guy like Norvell would only be in his early 40’s - still plenty of time to pursue a job where he’d have a better chance of winning Championships - be it in college or the NFL. If he stays the course and brings the school back to competitiveness out of the probation period, he might get a statue erected one day.
Florida might have interest in Norvell also. They are desperate for offense. If that is the case I would think he would strongly consider them over Tennessee and Arkansas (if we have an opening).
from what I hear here in Memphis about his dream of returning to AR where his wife is from, where his brother-in-law lives(Fayetteville), & where he apparently bought property in May(Beaver Lake), I’d be shocked if he doesn’t “fight” to be the next Head Hog(he’s said that off the record).
Why would any young highly sought after coach go to a situation like the mess at Ole Miss? He can get the same or bigger money from any number of schools. I just can’t see him taking that job. It would be career suicide.
I’ve heard a few OM fans say they should hire “the Hat” to get them thru their probation…hard to argue.
I like their possible hat better than the ‘smile’ we endured.
A lot of factors play into a job decision.
What’s one of the main ones? Your wife, and making sure she and your family are happy. I think Arkansas is easily the favorite to get Norvell, we are a better program than Ole Miss, and Tennessee probably wants that proven huge name. On top of the whispers that Norvell says this is his destination job.
Mercy, just talked to a friend and he knows Mike’s wife. He owns a business here in town.
Wow he had a few thinks to say. Now did he break bread with her? No but know who she is.
I’m not even going to state the name of the business. I don’t want him have something get back to him.
But is was interesting on what he had to say. Good stuff, we’ll see.
You’re not gonna even give us a clue to what he said?
Back when living in Ft Smith. Dreaming ahead, to be a HC and maybe coach Arkansas. Mind you the guy hadn’t even made it to Memphis yet.
Mike Norvell Married Maria Chilino. They meet at UCA. Parents lived in Ft Smith.
Norvell did buy a million dollar lake house at Hickory Creek on Beaver Lake.
it is looking like norvell is in the lead
some in tennessee think they are getting petrino
for some reason i can picture that
i think norvell is on everyones list that is looking for a new head coach including florida but i also think they are going to go after bigger name after their recent hiccups with the young up and comers
no way norvell goes to ole miss. they in a world of hurt.
