Thoughts from an old guy ....

For years, I had great seats in Walton, from the Sutton through the Richardson era and for years afterward. Like you, I have suffered since, never failing to support, until age and health reasons forced us to stop making the 150 mile trip to the games. This insider board, newspapers and TV provided the information and touch, and today I was to be out of pocket, but used the the recorder for the game. I planned an adult beverage or two, my comfortable chair, and arrived home at 7pm to watch the game. Unfortunately, as I came through the door, the TV was on and the announcer said “Missouri snapped a 14 game SEC losing streak by upsetting Arkansas”. I decided to watch Fox news.

I now must admit I have really lost most of my interest in Hog Basketball. No one will miss me (as I said, I gave up my tickets several years ago). The last year I had tickets I couldn’t give them away. It seemed no one cared any more. I supported the hire of Coach Anderson, but it seems now that this decision is not working out. For a variety of reasons (my weekly breakfast club of rabid Razorback fans, some who shouldn’t be driving) seem to share this observation.

I wonder, is it chemistry? Is the coaching staff unable to mesh these young men? Someone said there has been no change in coaching strategy since MA’s first year? Talent seems to have improved.

The game has changed but we have not. UK, UF, and Louisville were up tempo teams that changed and integrated more fundamental defense into their schemes. CMA is stubbornly clinging to 40 minutes of Hell and the trapping defense. The physical hand checking we were allowed to do in the 90’s made trapping and pressing lethal. Hand checking has been killed by rule changes many years ago. The trapping defense is not as effective now unless you have super athletic speed and quickness for recovery. The trapping defense is NOT a good scheme against teams that have good guards…or guards that are better than ours. We don’t seem to change schemes to match our talent or our opposition’s. I had hoped that we were going to go to more man and zone (no traps) instead of so much reliance on trapping against good guards. We always leave someone open for an easy shot when we trap good guards.
