If everyone plays the same spread and up tempo game then the team with the most money, best coaches, and largest recruiting base will win. Football is in a transition state - right now we have almost an entire conference (B12) who has adopted the spread offenses favored by their primary recruiting base in Texas. They have an easier time recruiting Texas high school athletes as a result but their product on the field has suffered as they have lost the ability to beat an offense that favors a more traditional approach. Right now the SEC has a good mix but more and more people are pushing for the spread offense to be adopted. The more teams move toward that the better Arkansas will fair - there are many parts of the country with high schools that do not run the spread and there are many great athletes who are not built for the spread. We can press this to our advantage to attract players that know they will fit our scheme and thus press our edge. You see that already with our success attracting big OL, top TE, and pro style QBs. As more and more people more to the spread the better our defense will get because the players recruited to stop the spread will not be as good stopping our ground game and the players on the field will not have as much experience stopping our brand of football. Our main problem is going to be on defense where we can’t outcompete the best teams who are all recruiting to stop the spread. But I would advocate for keeping our offense as it is in the face of massive changes in the college sport. There’s a reason why the service academies, Georgia Tech, etc. often are difficult for people to beat running the triple option - it is uncommon and when you are good at something uncommon you can often surprise people who look better on paper.

Arkansas does not have the natural advantages shared by the top teams. We will likely never be a top team. But we can be a consistently good team if we stick with our current approach rather than trying to ape what the big boys are doing. Those are just my thoughts on the matter.

These type posts of just be happy competing sound like the spiel of a NFL mega wealthy team owner. Arkansas has been a regularly yearly Top 10 program for decades in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Why do we now have to settle for a coach that makes three million a year and cannot develop a FG kicker? This coach stunk up the field inside the Texas A&M five yard line several weeks back. Anyone that thinks that type football will fly long term in Arkansas must be on some strange west coast type high.

Go for it when you have the time. I want somebody else to explain to me why Bielema’s welfare comes before that of the Arkansas Razorbacks. Tell me again how tough the world of SEC football is and how on the field expectations just must be drastically lowered. Even when your hero promised SEC championships on his hiring. I think the most probable outcome is that we stay within 10 points into the third quarter, but Alabama eventually covers the spread (say, 38-24) thanks to a score set up by its defense or kicking game.

I’m not sure what you are driving at - I’d say that OL and DL are where we’ve done our best recruiting outside of OL last year with the loss of our OL coach. And not sure how special teams plays into it.

I wish you people would at least read the thread. Saying the OL is where we did our best recruiting after that Texas A&M performance sounds like an old folks home blurb. The kicking is never dependable. Short kick offs, inability to make clutch FG’s, missed extra points against Georgia & Alabama were costly several years back, un-excusable. Just BAD fundamental football, the football history of Bielema is what I am driving at.

All you have done is write opinionated dribble personally directed at me fueled by putting your own thoughts in my head. No hate or desire for past coaches or hoping the Hogs lose, I just don’t like Bielema bad fundamental football resulting in losses over & over. I believe our best chance to win this game is to come out in with twin wide-outs to spread the Bama defense out. That should give our OL a chance to go 5 on 5 on running plays. We have had problems this year blocking to the second level against good defenses but if our line can only block the guy in front of him, we might have a chance to gain yardage on the ground.
