Made Virginia basketball a force with players like Ralph Sampson. Got to two Final Fours and won the 1980 NIT title (the next year was won by some coach with polka dot shirts). Wound up with 418 wins at Davidson and UVa before retiring at age 48 to return to Davidson as AD.
Had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s three years ago. Man, I hope this research I’m doing helps curtail that disease.
He sure appeared to be a class guy, one that I also admired, certainly a far cry from some of the characters who have graced many benches since his time.
