Tennessee AD John Currie gone....

Well, we take our football very seriously in the SEC. That said, I can scarcely imagine a more amateurish coach-hiring pursuit than what Currie has conducted. It’s all been out in the open and basically public. Each rejection by interviewed coaches compounded Tennessee’s poor image.

Hate to see anyone lose his job, but he probably deserved to be fired. He was only on the job for 8 months or so.

Saw this on Chris Low’s twitter, by the way, if you want to verify. Really something.

There are two SEC football searches going on now without an AD in place. Amazing.

Wonder if they go after Long?

I have heard they want Fulmer as AD. How old is he?

Rocky Top continues to crumble. Folks here in TN have run off one coach candidate and now an AD. Sounds familiar.

[/quote]Reportedly, Curie was in Washington meeting with Mike Leach and was recalled to get the ax.

This is an amazing run of public futility by and AD during a coaching search.

Slight clarification: Bruce Feldman reported the meeting with Leach was in Los Angeles.

Fulmer is 67. I think he has wanted that job for a while.

Sabatage is what the tenn fans are hinting at. Saying fulmer and other big money guys sabataged every move the ad wanted to make. Kinda sounds like what could escalate here.

They could do much worse than Fulmer. He has no administrative experience I’m aware of, but right now they need to stop the bleeding. Fulmer is a lot more popular there now that none of his successors has done anything well. If he’s 67, it’s not likely he’ll be on the job terribly long. I’d think no more than 5-6 years. That’d be time to somewhat right the UT ship. He’d at least know what to look for in a HC.

What I’m hearing from a former compliance officer inside the UT AD Dept is that PF was behind the firing and is about to be announced as the interim AD. Fulmer was not involved (was unaware during the process) in Currie’s attempt to hire Schiano, and apparently when told that Currie was about to offer a MOU to Leach somehow pushed some buttoms and had Currie pulled back from the leach meeting where he was promptly fired.

On a side note, John Currie was an asst AD at UT when Fulmer was HC, and was involved with, on board with his firing. Many here thought PF would not be happy with Currie being brought back to run UT athletics, but publicly Fulmer seemingly supported it, and in fact he was soon thereafter named to some sort of an advisory role within the AD Dept.
