Spring practice - Day 1 observations

  • Chad Morris said on Monday the focus for this spring was fundamentals, and the opening few minutes of the first day of practice proved that. A mix of offensive and defensive players went through ball security drills, and offensive linemen were charged to dive on loose balls and smother it. A few of the linemen locating, running to and diving on the loose balls drew some laughs from other linemen waiting their turn.

Arkansas had 12 offensive linemen for the first day of spring. Morris said Monday that Kirby Adcock (hip) and Audry Horn (toe) would miss time with injuries.

  • Quarterback rotation minus Connor Noland went Ben Hicks-John Stephen Jones in group 1, and Daulton Hyatt-Jack Lindsey in group 2. I’ll say this, Lindsey may not see the field for much other than being the team’s place holder, but he dropped a number of dimes today when throwing to Trey Knox. Hicks looked solid, too. He threw a bit high of tight end Cheyenne O’Grady once on a post route, but O’Grady stuck his big right hand up and snatched it in stride. Probably the most impressive thing I saw.

  • Morris also mentioned on Monday that Hayden Henry and Micahh Smith would be in non-contact jerseys. Both wore green jerseys throughout the open portion of practice today. Smith looked to be wearing a brace on his right wrist.

  • I mentioned Knox earlier, and he really stood out Friday. He was working in a group with Jimmie Stoudemire, Mike Woods and Koilan Jackson. I’m really interested to see what kind of spring the latter two have, but Knox showed off really good, strong hands. Lindsey fired a ball maybe a touch high to Knox on a 15-yard comeback route, and Knox snagged it with ease. His hands and how fluid he was in his routes kind of popped.

  • Bumper Pool, at least for the spring, is wearing No. 10, a change from the No. 16 he wore last season. De’Vion Warren is also wearing No. 1. Big news there.

  • Somewhat appropriately, the first song played over the speakers prior to practice beginning was ‘The Next Episode’ by Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. Year 2 is now underway.

Thank you for the notes. We have reasons for hope at positions where the Hogs were hopeless last season.

Thank you Scottie. Hope we see a lot more of this type of reporting. I am really surprised there was not more.

Hope they didnt play the last line of that song over the speakers…SWED

Did Deon Stewart gain any weight this guy was light as a feather his whole career you can’t block at this level being 160

Gotcha… I guess that’s Cornelius old number…But some numbers do you have some added significance such as #5 for Arkansas, etc.

I did this observations post, video with players afterward and wrote on Joe Foucha. And on top of that, Blake did a sights and sounds video from the first day and Clay wrote a story today.

That’s about all you are going to get when you just see 20 minutes and most of that is individual periods. I was at baseball, basically because that’s where Dwight Stewart was going to be at – then came back for player interviews at football. They have a press box at baseball. It was a bit chilly for me at football for that first 20 minutes of only a little bit of individual drills. I’m told there will be a few days where we get to see all of it and I’ll try to attend those.
