Don’t think it is related to anything in particular. I think it started Katy Perry had that Super Bowl halftime show with the dancing sharks. Then at a basketball game a couple years ago about 30 or 40 students dressed up like sharks.
I believe it just kind of came out of nowhere, and @navyhog is right. The first time I remember seeing it was the Minnesota game in Bud Walton Arena in 2017. Jimmy wrote this shortly after:
