Some hoops tidbits

A few things I’m hearing.

Jaylin Williams is moving the ball well. I think this is an area that was overlooked when he was in HS.

Vance Jackson started out practicing well and then had a two week loll. Has played better again lately.

Moses Moody is shooting well

Jalen Tate has been good as point guard. Great length at point, rebounds at point and long arms defensively

Justin Smith is an NBA athlete with a great body. Has been inconsistent in practice and with his shot.

Vanover hasn’t been on the floor that much.

From what you’ve heard, if there was a starting 5, who would that be?

I listened to Musselman’s interview and he seemed to indicate Williams and Moody as a lock to start, but who else would you say?

My guess based on very little info:

Tate
Moody
Sills
Smith
Jackson

`I wouldn’t argue with that line-up to start the season. In Muss’ Zoom conference yesterday, he let it be known that in scrimmages Desi and Notae and also Tate and KK were battling each other. You’d have to assume that Desi and Notae are battling for the 2G spot and Tate and KK are battling for the PG spot.

We’ll see tonight if those 2 pairs are on opposite teams tonight. Muss stated that he will be changing the lineups some after the half. If we consider that Moody, Smith, and Jackson will be starters, then he would want to see Desi/Notae and Tate/KK each play a half with those 3.

Of course, if he’s trying to just make the two teams tonight as competitive as they can be, none of that above would be true.

Very likely starting lineup for Game 1. Of the five, I think Smith is the least likely to hold on to the starter spot.

Wow, I’m usually on the same page with you regarding most things basketball. I couldn’t be any more on the polar opposite side of that statement. In fact, I believe that Smith is the only lock to start.

I just think he is very inconsistent. I was not impressed with his play in the three games against us. Indiana fan base have said he used to disappear in big games. My guess is eventually Williams beats him out for that spot.

Not saying he is not good. Just think there is a better player on the roster who will deliver consistently.

I also think Williams will eventually start (or get starter minutes), but I believe those minutes will come from Jackson. I think the same will be true of KK and his minutes will come from Tate. I believe Smith is a much better interior defender than Jackson.

I think our most “purely talented” five will eventually be KK, Moody, Desi, Smith, and Williams.

Agreed. Muss pointed out that Smith was very smart and had the ability and understood 4 different positions (I assume everything but PG).

I too think he is a lock to start every game.

How these guys defend as a unit will likely determine which 5 will settle in to be the main group. Probably going to take a few games to determine who those 5 will be, but I’ll be surprised if anyone takes minutes away from Tate. Coach places such high priority on defending the perimeter, and the length Tate provides makes him very valuable in this system.

I’m thinking it’s a bit premature to define who’s gonna make it and those who won’t. So many new guys. Several who’ve never played together before. Some being retreads. Almost no prior year Hog points.

We have a long way to go.

What do you mean by retreads? Demeaning statement in my opinion. Before you answer my response, I know you don’t care what I think.

Oxford says, “a tire that has been given a new tread”.

Why has Conner missed so many practices?

Someone said he had the flu.

Per Muss or someone Conner had the flu for a week or longer. Lost weight and stamina obviously. That will take time to regain.
