Just came from game. Like what I saw in the second half.

Thought everyone played fairly well, besides outside shooting. That group with Cook, Beard, Watkins, Jones, and Thompson really put the game out of reach and they caused a lot of havoc on defense. I was impressed with Arlando Cook, he was a bit of a wildcard in the red/white game, but I thought he played under control and had a nice touch under the rim when he finally entered in the the second half. IMO, he’s our best forward in that full court press guarding the in-bounder, he’s really quick and can switch at just about all positions.

Also was really impressed with Macon. Before it’s all said and done this season he may be in the argument of who’s the best player on the team. You can’t see a lot of what he did in the stats this game, but man he really gets after it on defense, he’s by far our best on-ball defender. And he has a really nice shooting stroke and can get to the rim whenever he wants. You can kinda see him taking the lead and commanding guys out there.

Looking forward to the last exhibition game next week!

Thanks for the report. I agree with you totally on Macon. I’ve been saying the same thing since I saw him this last spring in the AR/TN all star game. He has all the tools to be a great defender. Smooth, but quick lateral movement and very quick hands. Did he and Beard get to play together any? They could put some misery on our opponents’ guards when they are both in the game. Could be our best pair of guard defenders since Beck and McDaniel.

I’m going to next Friday’s exhibition game and really looking forward to it too.

Yea, Beard and Macon got to play together to end the first half. CMA went with a small lineup of Beard, Macon, Barford, Watkins, and Kingsley to close the half. That’s a really quick and defensive minded group. This group pushed the lead to 10 at half, it was really close before that. I must also mention Watkins is much improved, he looks a lot faster than he did last year, and really looks to be aggressive now going towards the rim. He shooting is still about the same though.

They have been trying to slim manny down for the last 2 years. He looked like an OLB last year.

Just in from the game and the hogs looked bad as a team. This is a terrible team they played. Beard still takes bad shots and can’t play D. Moses and Dusty passed too much, if they are gonna give up shots, somebody has to make them. Just like last year, we can’t shoot or defend the 3. Luckily our athletism took over in the second half and we just out ran them. Substitution pattern will get better but was ragged tonight, I know it’s early but one of these guards has to play the point. Moses has to get used to double teams because that’s what he is going to get. I’m probably a little harsh but I expected better. A lot needs to happen to become a good team, and there were bright spots and flashes of our capabilities.

Thought:
Okay the hawgs won by 27pts and you felt they played terrible, go figure

Likely missed it, but is there a box score to glance at?

Thanks.

Looking forward to seeing how often Barford gets to the foul line

Yup. Can’t wait to see Barford and Macon play.

One interesting stat to me was our PG assist to TO ratio. Barford 1:3. Beard 4:0. Realize a small sample but something to follow.

I have to respectfully disagree with you, other the the first 15 minutes of first half and the 3 point shooting, I thought the hogs looked good, for the first exhibition game. And you have to figure for most of these guys this is the first time playing on this type of stage, even Hannahs and Barford said at the presser they had nerves going at the start. But, from the final 5 minutes of the first half until the game was over, we pretty much manhandled this team and did whatever we wanted. I know UCM had like 3 shot clock violations, and they struggled to even get into their offense most of the second half.

Also, for the final 5 minutes of the game CMA backed off the press, which they had no answer to, and just told them to do a 2-3 zone, and then he also put Hazen and Bailey in to get some minutes. Had he continued the press and kept the primary rotation guys in, we would have beat them by 40 easily. The fact we beat a team by 27 points, and you felt we played bad is a good sign IMO.

You mention that this team is as bad as last year’s team just in shooting the 3. Very pleased to hear that. I hope they are as bad as last year’s team. Hogs led SEC last year in shooting the 3 at 39.7%. Love to see them repeat that.

Tough crowd.

• Shot nearly 50 percent from the field (30-61) despite the horrid 1-of-18 on 3s
• Shot 55 percent in the second half - when they went up 73-44
• Forced 19 turnovers, only had 10 of their own (along with 17 assists)
• Dusty took 11 shots in 20 minutes - hit 7-of-11
• Central Missouri was 9-of-25 from 3-poiunt range (36 percent) while shooting just 38 percent overall (19-of-50)
• Had 2 guards with over 8 boards and dominated 41-26 as they should have.

Looked bad as a team? Thinking you went in expecting a Final Four contender and were disappointed.

I have now seen 7 practices, 4 games in Spain and two here.

I don’t see a bad team

I am high on these hogs and coach A. but I really hope alarm bells are going off at practice about the horrendous 3pt defense carrying over from last year.

I see what you mean by played terrible… Kentucky last night in their exhibition game vs Clarion??? didn’t run a single offensive play and just jacked up 3pt attempts and leaked out for potential ally-oops.

Nothing more than a playground scrimmage as did #9 Michigan St who trailed a division 3 team at the half.

It was actually pretty similar to their first game in Spain. They played noticeably better in the second half.
