He is definitely growing as the season has gone along. He definitely helped yesterday, but my question is this, as athletic as he is, he did not take advantage of that against the slower player yesterday, in this case, Brown yesterday. He has lost the handle several times driving to the basket, but I think his athleticism is not shown as much as you would think.
Specifically, his ‘handle’.
Walsh has to start taking the corner 3 ball. He gets that shot multiple times every game. Most of the time when he makes a mistake, it is because he passed up that shot.
Bingo usually ends up as a charge! He passes true open shot up and then someone else ends up rushing to get a poor shot.
That’s exactly the way I feel. Our team, this year’s unit, struggles getting open shots. He may have the best shooting form in the top 7 – so, he needs to shoot that more.
Walsh is a real hoss. He plays tenacious defense and can rebound. He does not handle the ball well or shoot it real well, but he will improve if he stays. He could be outstanding by the time he leaves here to try the pros.
Yes I think Walsh’s biggest problem is he tries to be too much of a team player… He needs to have confidence in his shot!! He has a very pure looking stroke and a very good mid-range game but he passes up open shots in the lane and on the baseline that he has to be able to start sticking.
He has to realize that when he starts making a few of those that will open up his driving game much better.
I love the kid and how hard he plays and I think he can be a big factor and how far we go this year.
He has all kinds of skills. I tend to agree with you. I think confidence does seem to have something to do with his hesitancy to take on somebody that does not seem near as athletic and take them to the rim.
Walsh plays so hard and is one of my all time favorites because of that. He would have benefited so much if Smith had been available as our pg.
I wonder how much he had to rely on his teammates in high school. Players like Walsh were the big dog on their high school team and perhaps didn’t fully develop the team skills needed at college. He did transfer for his senior year to an elite team, but I have no idea how team ball played out for him there. He has skills, that’s quite evident.
He plays with great energy, and he never seems to tire.
I saw Walsh play with Link at the end of season tournament and he appeared to work well with a very talented roster. He was the best player on the team, but there were other studs on the team (Omaha Biliew for instance).
I think athleticism earned Jordan Walsh a 5 star. From the skills point of view, his game needs a lot of improvement. He looks to be about 6-6 or 6-7 at the most to me. That means he needs to have a perimeter game and ability to take defender off the dribble to make it in NBA.
Dead hit, PJ. He is a first-rank pure athlete with an undeveloped game. He will improve his game.
The handle needs to get better, and he needs to really improve on threes to prosper long-term in the NBA. I think that’s all doable, but I am beginning to believe that coming back for another year would be helpful.
We’ll see what happens the rest of the season, because he could raise his offensive game enough in the next few weeks to make a big difference in draft position. As it stands now, I would not be too surprised to see him declare, go through the process and then decide to come back.
PJ is correct. He has a high ceiling but it will be an process of skill level development for significant duration.
Greed— take the shot young Walsh.
