Property damage?

Rooted for the Dogs. As did my Labrador Retriever pup, even though he was asleep for most of the game. But what’s up with Kirby Smart’s “There’s gonna be some property damage in
Indianapolis tonight” comment? Even given the context, the post-game exuberance, I was stunned that he said that. My puppy has destroyed a lot of my property, but I hardly encourage him. Jeez!

That’s a reference to a line Georgia radio guy Larry Munson (think Paul Eells times 3) said after they won their last title in 1980.

Actually it was after the miracle play (Run Lindsey) that allowed Jawja to beat Florida that year.

Now I get the reference. But the original quote seems to refer to Georgia people getting so excited they destroy their own property in celebration. Not someone else’s. Kirby Smart seems like a good guy. I bet if he had the chance for a do-over, he wouldn’t have said that, or wouldn’t have said it the way it came out.

I think Georgia people understood him perfectly, and the rest of us were scratching our heads until we got the explanation.

I had heard that reference before. I’ve predicted before that if and when Arkansas beats Alabama that there will be some property damage – like some couches set on fire on Dickson Street. So saying something like that is as old as the hills and twice as dusty.

Fun fact: Paul Eells replaced Larry Munson as Vanderbilt’s play-by-play announcer after the 1966 season. Munson spent 20 seasons at Vandy and Eells spent 11 there, but both are known best for their work at other SEC schools.

Would not surprise me at all.

I knew the “property damage” reference when Kirby Smart said it. That was probably Munson’s most famous call.

Rece Davis made another reference to Munson when he signed off that the Dogs had “hunkered down” one last time. Munson said “hunker down” several times per broadcast. There is a joke that the elevators in Georgia’s football building had buttons that said hunker up and hunker down.

My favorite Munson line was when Georgia beat TN in Knoxville 20 years ago. After a TD to take the lead Munson said “we just stepped on their face with a hobbed nailed boot and broke their nose”. Classic…

Someone better watch over the trees on the Georgia campus… beating Bama comes with a loss of shade.

Saw some reference to hobnailed boots last night too.

I know here, with the famed UNC-Duke basketball rivalry, that Duke traditionally used to take couches out of their dorms and burn them when they won. Until
a Dean put an end to it, too dangerous. And UNC traditionally storms the main drag, Franklin Street, when they win. Usually all in good fun. But when there was real property damage, like when a parked car was overturned, the law came a calling.

My favorite Munson moment was this one -

Great find @RyanRitchie. He never mentioned DMac’s name. Just said “there goes that guy”. And later “that’s the guy we’re supposed to be worried about”. Love it!

I knew the “Run Lindsey” part of the call; I didn’t remember the property damage part. And I definitely knew about hunker down.
