Practice notes + observations - Aug. 7

  • Watched Nick Starkel run with the second-team offense a little bit today. He seemed to have good command of the group and made a couple of nice throws in quick game for positive yardage. He barely missed TQ Jackson on a deep ball. He also missed a couple of easy throws, including one that was much too high for De’Vion Warren on a designed screen. Devwah Whaley had a couple of nice runs of about 10 yards, too. He was very patient and waited for the hole to widen before bursting through.

  • TJ Hammonds broke off what would have been a 51-yard touchdown with fourth team. Morris was asked about Hammonds on Tuesday and said he wants to see consistency. He saw good things from him in the first four days of practice, and it looks like he got off to a good start on Day 5.

  • Offensive lineman Luke Jones, who did not take part in practice on Tuesday, wore a green jersey today. Why is unclear. He was the only player in a no-contact jersey on the first day of full pads. We did not see freshman tight end Hudson Henry today. Taurean Carter, who Morris said yesterday was probably going to miss a few days with a shoulder injury, was back and ran with the fourth-team defense. Daulton Hyatt (hamstring) was also a no-show. I also did not see DL Isaiah Nichols.

  • Deon Stewart, TQ Jackson, Treylon Burks and Kendall Catalon all worked at punt return today.

  • We will talk to select players today around 12:15 p.m. and have video a little bit later.

Jackson and Burks are big dudes for punt returning. Sounds like they are sure handed and got some escapability. If true, that is something new for us.

I guess no one’s concerned about his knee? Gotta think that’s a very good status.
