Practice notes and observations - Sept. 4

I feel like most of the observations from today’s practice are the same as yesterday.

But before we get started: Chad Morris said Arkansas will wear all white on Saturday at Ole Miss.

Arkansas did thud work and went 1s vs. 1s and 2s vs. 2s in period No. 3 today. Here are the first team units:

1st offense
QB: Ben Hicks
RBs: Rakeem Boyd began the series, Devwah Whaley entered later
OL (L–>R): Myron Cunningham, Kirby Adcock, Ty Clary, Ricky Stromberg, Dalton Wagner
WRs: Mike Woods, Treylon Burks and Trey Kox
TEs: Grayson Gunter, Cheyenne O’Grady

Note: Colton Jackson (foot) and Austin Capps (ankle) did not participate in this period, but both were involved in the offensive line group work. Morris, moments before practice began, said Capps would not practice Wednesday. The offensive line during group work was (L–>R) Colton Jackson, Austin Capps, Ty Clary, Myron Cunningham, Dalton Wagner.

1st defense
DL: Gabe Richardson, Sosa Agim, TJ Smith, Mataio Soli
LB: Bumper Pool, Scoota Harris
CB: Jarques McClellion
SS: Kam Curl
FS: Joe Foucha
CB: Montaric Brown
NB: Greg Brooks

Note: Defensive end Jamario Bell was not on the field during the open portion again today. Soli filled in in that spot, and Collin Clay followed with the second team. Zach Williams worked at second team end opposite Clay.

Connor Limpert and backup kicker Matthew Phillips finished each set of plays with a field goal. Limpert and Phillips both connected on 47-yard kicks.

During the thud work between the 1s, Trey Knox made a nice grab on a back-shoulder throw from Ben Hicks. With the 2s, Hudson Henry threw a block on brother Hayden Henry that sprung Chase Hayden for a nice gain on the ground. Hudson then dropped a pass, and Hayden Henry picked off Nick Starkel on the ensuing play.

Injuries
Did not see any players in green jerseys today. Chase Harrell, who wore one on Tuesday, was not seen during the open portion. Linebacker D’Vone McClure, who had thumb surgery earlier this week, was out of green as well and in a standard defense jersey. Morris said McClure will play this weekend.

Mataio Soli, who fractured a bone in his right hand Saturday, was present, full go and wearing a white club on the hand.

Absences

DE Jamario Bell (knee, 2nd straight day)

TE Chase Harrell (possible shoulder; was in green on Tuesday)

WR Jordan Jones (high ankle sprain; out “couple more weeks,” Morris said Monday)

WR Daulton Hyatt (hamstring)

DE Dorian Gerald (strained artery in neck; out for season)

WR Deon Stewart (ACL; out for season)

OL Noah Gatlin (ACL; out for season)

This may have been discussed somewhere else, but from what I hear Bell won’t play Saturday unless he does some serious healing from now to game time which always possible.
