Practice notes and observations - Oct. 2

Arkansas held its Wednesday bye-week practice inside Walker Pavilion. There wasn’t just a whole lot that stood out, but here are a few notes:

  • Players in green (limited participation): Tight end Cheyenne O’Grady, running back Rakeem Boyd, receiver Jordan Jones, receiver/kickoff returner De’Vion Warren, defensive end Gabe Richardson, defensive end Zach Williams. Chad Morris said on the SEC coaches teleconference that O’Grady and Boyd are dealing with nagging injuries. Warren is coming back from a concussion, Williams injured his knee a couple of weeks ago, and Richardson has a “bruise,” according to defensive ends coach Steve Caldwell.

  • Players who were absent: Receiver Trey Knox, receiver Mike Woods, receiver T.Q. Jackson, defensive tackle McTelvin Agim, offensive lineman Colton Jackson, offensive lineman Ty Clary, running back Chase Hayden. Knox and Woods are battling hip injuries, Morris said, Agim injured his knee and could return to practice on Thursday, and Clary and Hayden are in concussion protocol at the moment. Hayden is still experiencing headaches.

  • Running back T.J. Hammonds, who played in his first game this season against Texas A&M, was at practice wearing a heavy, black wrap on his right ankle. That looked to be slowing him a bit, but he was not in green, so I don’t see it being any kind of an issue.

  • Senior offensive lineman Austin Capps was present on Wednesday. He wore a brace on each knee, and looked to be moving well. I am eager to hear from offensive line coach Dustin Fry tonight. We get offensive assistants in the interview room, and I’m sure he’ll be a popular guy, as will receivers coach Justin Stepp, whose room is very thin this week with most of his top guys out.

  • Arkansas, in the five periods of practice we were able to see, did not do good-on-good work, so no depth chart items to report. Some players, who Morris calls high-rep guys, wore shorts during the workout. Nick Starkel, Ben Hicks, Boyd, O’Grady, to name a few, were in shorts.
