OT.. The one the only Secretariat

The most amazing thing I’ve ever seen in my life… just a once in a lifetime horse… I don’t think you’ll ever see another one like him.

“He is moving like a tremendous machine”

Seen several documentaries about this horse, I would highly recommend the Movie.

I always love to go back and watch that. Get goose bumps every time.

I think it is the greatest single performance in the history of sports.

Still holds the stakes record for all three Triple Crown races

Finished second to ManO’War in voting for greatest thoroughbred of all time, although one of the writers inexplicably left him completely OFF the list of ten voted

Love watching Seabiscuit. Mr Ed is an all timer :racehorse:

I agree; my junior year in HS; I remember watching that sitting next to my Dad (a rarity) a wonderful memory. I loved the horses back then; nothing like this one race and win in my experience.

Interesting story from The Athletic. Secretariat has one surviving daughter.

Thanks to the OP for posting these videos. Though I watched all of them live, it had been quite some time since I had watched any of them. Magnificent performances.

While watching, I realized it’s now 50 years since these races. Had not thought of that until just now.

Wow. This sounds so corny/trite, but it just doesn’t seem that long ago.

In one of the ESPN features on Secretariat, sportswriter Heywood Hale Broun was talking about how Jack Nicklaus once told him that he watched the Belmont at home, alone, and as Secretariat ran off and left the field, Jack jumped up and cheered and cried. Broun told him, “Jack, all your life you’ve been seeking perfection in a sport. That afternoon, you saw it.”

Was so blessed to have seen that (TV). Everybody was so caught up in that horse and then he won the Belmont with a 2 second breaking of the record. He broke the record in all three races. That is what greatness looks like!

Yes the track announcer said it best “Secretariat is moving like a tremendous machine” and he was…He had an extra large heart and it was almost like he was giving them a chance by starting so slow and then it was like he was saying" is that all ya’ll got" and then when he got tired of watching them he said “ok time to go” and Poof he was gone!!

I have the DVD and I have watched it many, many times. One of my favorites. As many times as I have watched it, it still gives me goosebumps when Big Red rounds the final turn. It was one of, if not the greatest moments in sports! Absolutely astonishing!

Chick Anderson stayed with us at Lake Ouachita in the prime of his career and he called that Belmont. He joked about being better than Warbucks who was his favorite Oaklawn runner to call because of his late charge. Chick was a nice man with a cute daughter, one of my racetrack favorites.
