I definitely am done with duck hunting. Promise no more!
A big smile and a happy heart enjoying your glee from special memories with friends of a like mind. You couldn’t drag me out there, but that steak sure sounded good.
Clay, a wonderful story - during my career I was afforded the opportunity to hunt at some of the best lodges in the country. It was always a wonderful experience that I never took for granted! The guides and Staff that work at these places seem cut from the same cloth, the most courteous and helpful people you could ever meet. And given the surroundings, it really does make for a special experience
I grew up in DeWitt and duck hunted on the other side of the county on ground bordering the White River Refuge. Those were good times. I can remember as evening would fall both the geese and ducks darkening the sky there were so many coming and going out of the Refuge. The geese would be so large in numbers and making so much noise that it would run deer out of the fields back to the woods. Either in a duck blind or deer stand the thought I always had was that the scene of so much wildlife would be as close as I ever got to seeing those kind of numbers that one would see on the Serengeti in Africa.
To go to one of these places with good friends really heightens the experience. You look forward to the next hunt together for 12 months.
The White River Refuge is the engine that powers Arkansas County. I have actually hunted both sides of it in the same weekend, a hunt at Whiskey Chute in Phillips County and Ward’s Reservoir south of DeWitt.
I know a lot about Arkansas County after being married to a DeWitt girl for 43 years.
Great stories that anyone who has spent time in blind or flooded timber can relate to. Hunting quail in South Georgia at one of those clubs is another similar experience but not as wet or cold. Stephens owned a club near Albany they sold for almost $40m a couple years ago. That kind of money attracts best of hunting partners and staff to manage the relationships. No telling how many biz or political deals get done at such places. Great times if one gets chance to go.
I also grew up in DeWitt and hunted on White River Refuge hundreds of times. It was some good times.
Went down about two months ago for a couple of early season hunts and had moderate success but had great guides and great time with family and friends.
My friend was hunting Redhill and it was frozen except for a few holes. They had a duck or two that couldn’t get to because of the ice. A few days later Jimmy sent him a video of about an 11-ft gator moseying around where my friend was standing with duck feathers all around. The gator appreciated the duck feast!
They pointed us to the gator spot. And of course the massive gator on display at Mack’s Sporting Goods is from Hampton’s Reservoir. They got em at Hampton’s. That’s for sure.
I spent a lot of time in Arkansas County as well years ago. Fished at Hampton’s, Bayou La Grue and a place called Cox Cypress, as well as areas along the White River. Great memories. Wild country!
