Fly fishing legend Dave Whitlock passed on Wednesday night. He had a massive stroke preparing his boat near the casting pond at his home near Fort Gibson, OK. He was 91.
If there was a Mount Rushmore for fly fishing, Dave would be there.
He was a great author, artist and an expert on stream habitat. He is directly responsible for the great brown trout fisheries on White and Red Rivers with his Whitlock-Vibert egg boxes.
Dave’s books on aquatic trout food are the best on the subject. I have several of his prints. I have a thank you card (featuring original pencil art) framed near my fly fishing desk. I got to fish with him on Norfork River last summer.
