Osabuohien Dismissed from Basketball Team

FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas head men’s basketball coach Eric Musselman announced today that forward Gabe Osabuohien has been dismissed from the program.

“We have set a level of expectations for our student-athletes on and off the court,” Musselman said. “After discussions with Gabe, it was decided that it would be best to part ways. We thank him for his time at Arkansas and wish him well.”

I the worst with keeping track of the scholarship count, but can someone explain where this puts us moving forward with 2019 and 2020 classes. Also, is there a plan for his replacement?

Great news

Gabe’s dismissal, means there’s 12 scholarship players. 13 is the limit:

Scholarships currently available by recruiting class:
2019 (1) - Gabe*
2020 (3) - Bailey, Cylla and Whitt
2021 (2) - Harris and Jones
2022 (6) - Joe, Sills, Iyola, Henderson, Chaney and Notae
2023 (1) - Vanover
*If not filled, Gabe’s would roll to 2020 class.

Well what happened?

So, we currently have 9 players eligible for next season? Is that right?

I guess it isn’t that big a deal since we can practice with the transfers. However, the forwards are currently Cylla, Chaney, Bailey, and Henderson. I think Henderson can contribute, but, if he isn’t ready, any injury could be a problem. Jones could play some four. I thought CMA should have put him there last year if he wanted Sills and Harris in the lineup. Of course, that would have left us with almost no rotation in the backcourt.

You are leaving off the Obukwelu the 6’8 walk-on transfer. I’m not counting on him much, but he did average around 19 points a game in Division II basketball. He is limited athletically, but he has a nice jumpshot up to 15 feet.

I’ve been pessimistic IRT Henderson’s ability, but he is long and can really jump. Hope he proves me wrong.

I anticipate by design and necessity a lot of small ball.

Gabe surely was unproductive a lot last year. So I get that it’s good news in some ways. But it’s sad to see someone make decisions that lead to dismissal no matter how much of a liability he might be perceived.

All the best to Gabe in his next stop. Hopefully this will be a hard earned life lesson that will make him a better man.

Gabe was a valuable asset on D. You do have to play both ends of the court. A defensive specialist can be very important, especially if you have a surplus of scoring.

What the heck did Gabe do? I liked the energy and blue collar mentality he brought. I thought he would be a big part of next year’s team. Next year is beginning to look like year 1 of the Stan Heath era.

well I hate that but the one thing he could do was rebound so with him gone we are even smaller team now and he will missed for sure b/c we have no size on this team and rebounding could be a huge problem and CEM can already see that…

For those of us not near FYV, what did he do?

Only rumors, but not thought to be grade related.

Dudley/ Richard. Any chance for a grad transfer to help with rebounding this year?

Very slim pickin’s this close to school starting.

Click on the “immediate eligibility” tab at the top of that column (twice - maybe) to arrange the players with immediate status (YES) to the top, then look to see who has not yet committed to a “new school”. I don’t see more than 3 or 4 guys with any size, and only 1 or 2 big guys that left decent programs.

I knew we would regret losing Ibby Ali.

PJ, I’m told Gabe has had a problem since last year. It should have never been passed to our new coach. I’m told everyone was hoping things would get cleared up but didn’t happen. Too bad for everyone.

If that’s true, and I have no idea what that problem might have been, you wonder why it took until 10 days before classes start for Muss to make this move.

Per the other site, the one who claims they check with at least two sources (and the one who told me earlier this summer about Henderson), it may have been an issue in which the U of A had to let it play out before they could take action (they’re also saying he did the same thing this summer while waiting for the first issue to play out). What that issue is, and whether it happened multiple times like is being said, no clue.
