I think if you want to be good at a position you have to focus on it in recruiting.
I noticed that the very first player mentioned as a possible transfer was a WR, a position that we have good depth both in experience and youth.
I am not saying you don’t take a good one, but the team desperately needs to focus on the DL and secondary.
The second tier to me in LB and QB.
I suppose the next name we hear will be a running back.
If we do not improve in the secondary everything else is mute because Odom will once again have to design his defense around hiding his secondary. We need a ton of new blood and some serious addition through subtraction in the backfield and/or some serious pass rushers on the DL. We can’t have so many of our sacks coming from a LB that has left a giant gap to run through.
Stay tune.
I’m thinking AJ Green may hit the portal. Hope not.
Nothing would shock me.
Shocked when we got Hazelwood and Sanders. We will lose some but lets hope for more pleasant surprises like those 2 then the other. I don’t think it will turn out as bad as we fear. Still a lot to sell with our program. We could be A&M!
We definitely need to take the big 6’6 kid from the FCS School that you mentioned about a week ago that kids a stud!!
Yeah and that’s an absolute shame and I could not blame AJ at all. Kid could be a very good player but he’s going to have to get to where he can get more than just a few carries each game because he’s one of those guys to where he can break along one every time he touches it but he very rarely has any kind of crease at all to run in.
I very much wish AJ would stay, think he is a very good running back and love his explosiveness and how he can explode at the line of scrimmage. Hope you stay, but good luck in whatever you decide,
I think we need to look long and hard at the OL/DL we need several good transfers in those areas because we are going to lose possibly quite a few on the OL and I’m not sold at all on the backups at some of those positions. The DL is the backbone of the defense we are going to have to start getting elite players there or we will never be the kind of defense we want to be. We are bringing in some really really good linebackers but a good transfer portal there would not hurt at all as well as in the secondary.
I think you can always use a breakaway wide receiver
DL and QB up grades
I am not sure about the OL backups because they never played.
Now that can mean any number of things including they are not good enough. But to me the coaches strategy was to just play the starters
The DL’s strategy was just the opposite. They played a bunch of guys to keep everyone fresh.
Based on the way the OL wore down as the season went on the DL seemed to have it right.
Traditionally you don’t sub in and out for offensive linemen as they need to develop a repoire with each other and know where each is going to be. That is when you have a really good offensive line when those 5 together can take on and move forward as they wish.
Defensive lineman are rotated so you keep someone in fresh constantly running at the lineman. Hence why you sub.
But this season they wore down. There is just no way around that. Perhaps substituting an entire new line every fourth series might have merit. Of course that can be adjusted depending on the game situation.
I just think if you have 15 OLM on scholarship and only five can start, surely out the other ten there are five that can work together to form a second line. If not why are they here? Yes I know some are probably hurt, but we saw the current system does not hold up against the kind of schedule we play.
And they need game time experience. There is no way around that either.
I don’t know if a program anywhere that runs the Oline like you speak of. In blow out games yes, but doing a substitution like that runs the risk of stalling out your offensive momentum.
Just isn’t gonna happen
