Hogs are -2 early, have moved up from T-14 to T-10 and two shots out of eighth. Wil Gibson and Julian Perico with early birdies. It’s so early one of our guys is on the first fairway (we hope)
Hogs are now -4 for the round and have moved up to T-7. Four under is the best score for the round so far; of course 15 teams haven’t teed off yet. De Oliveira and Perico are both -2 on the round.
We gave some strokes back later in the round but we’re off the course now, +6 for the day and tied for 12th place. And there’s every indication that some teams in the afternoon round will fall below us (Oregon, Kansas and Arizona are all +13 for the day with plenty of holes to play). Perico and Pinto both shot even par today, but we also had to count a +5 from Gibson.
I’m seeing quite a few black and blue scores on the Golfstat hole by hole. Blue is double bogey, black is triple and above. Gibson had a black that we had to count. As I understand desert courses, they don’t have much rough but they have cactus and sagebrush if you miss the fairways. Hit one into that, you get blues and blacks on the score page.
And sure enough as we sit in the clubhouse (or probably having dinner at this point) other teams have put it in reverse and floored it. We’re now tied for 8th, which is the key number to qualify for match play after Monday’s round. And the way they’re putting up ugly numbers, we may be sixth by the end of the day.
Looks like a sixth-place tie (with Auburn); there are still several teams on the course but none within 6 shots of the Hogs.
Looks like the morning tee times were the place to be today. Nobody in the afternoon groups shot as well as the Hogs +6; Ole Miss was the best at +7. Auburn was well ahead of us to start the day, shot +15 and dropped from second place to T-6. All of the top five teams going into tomorrow had early tee times today.
Segundo Pinto is +1 through two rounds, tied for ninth in the individual standings. The leader, from Vandy, is -3.
