Mike Anderson previews Austin Peay

Mike Anderson:

– We worked out yesterday a couple of times and the guys are trying to come back and get their rhythm back.

– Austin Peay is pretty hot right now, won six straight games. They bring a physical brand of basketball, averaging 85 points per game and is experienced. They’re balanced and they rebound at a high clip. We have to match that physicality. We want to get the tempo to our liking as opposed to where the game is coming down to the last possession or so.

– We have to be consistent with the basketball. Defensively we’re still doing some pretty good things. Once you get closer to conference you want to be playing your better basketball.

– Dan is getting to the free throw line more. He’s got to be someone we can count on for a double-double. He’s the piece we can go through. He’s got a lot coming at him, and teams are being more physical with him. But he has some help. Isaiah can get some points, Mason is playing well and Jalen Harris, too. Those guys can kind of lean on his shoulders a little bit.

– These mid-major teams have some quality players and guys who are very experienced. You have to be able to figure out how to win those games, and sometimes it comes down to a possession or two, the free throw line, etc. Austin Peay will be similar to what South Carolina will throw at you. This will prepare us for what is to come in league play.

– On the slow starts of late: We have to be consistent in how we play. Part of it is me, too. I’m tinkering with the lineups and putting them in positions they haven’t been in before.

– Giving back to the community: It’s a humbling experience. These are people who are less fortunate than most, and we live in this community and it’s a great chance for us to give back. Our guys are kids themselves, so to see them put smiles on families’ faces is great. It makes them want to go out and do more in the community.

– On rebounding: We’re not going to have just 1-2 guys rebounding. We have to have more. Our guards are really going to have to be involved. When the guards are rebounding we can really push the pace. That’s what we have to work on with this team to be consistent with all we do. Defense has been good, but the ending part of defense is rebounding. We have to continue to address that throughout the year.

– On Adrio: He better bounce back. He has to bring that energy to the table.

– Justice Hill has not started practicing with the team yet.
