In 1964, my mother delivered a little sister into our family. I was 11 years old and there were no other siblings in between. We bonded instantly, and I found joy similar to what I’d experience as a father several years later. She was my pride and joy.

On her first birthday, Mom noticed (as Mothers do) that something was “off” with little sis. She was cranky (unusual) and - eventually - Mom noticed that she hadn’t urinated in several hours. Off to the emergency room, and a tumor was discovered. It wasn’t long until we got the diagnosis - neuroblastoma. In those days (1965), let’s just say that the diagnosis was not positive. We took her to MD Anderson, as no local facilities were really capable of dealing with the problem.

Long story short, that “little girl” will turn 59 later this year. She is among the very longest survivors (from that era) in the USA. Those physicians at MD Anderson were a God-send. In a world when oncology care is so, so much better and more available around the world than it was back then, they are still the best and brightest. I share your optimism for Mary’s complete recovery, and am praying for the both of you.
