I think those replies are actually positive for Arkansas. Nowhere did he say, “I am staying”. “I want to be” means he wants Auburn to counter offer. All of those quotes are exactly what any coach would say who is considering leaving.
A possible rephrasing at tomorrow’s presser in Fayetteville (but who the H knows):
He was asked about the Arkansas job. Here were some of his quotes:
“Yeah, I’m happy here at Auburn. We have great players; I love my players.” Loved them, hated to leave them, but have loved the Hogs a lot longer.
“We’ve worked extremely hard to get to this point. We’ve got a foundation built and I think the best is yet to come.” Left the Auburn prgm in great shape, think they will win a lot of games next year…hopefully not against us.
“I’m the head coach at Auburn and I want to be the head coach at Auburn.” But now I’m head coach at the school I grew up wanting to coach. To have this opportunity is just a dream, and one that would cause me to leave Auburn. Obviously I want to be here more than Auburn.
Does that mean you will be back? “I want to be.” Yes, I wanted to but, when Arkansas came calling, I realized I wanted to be back home a little more.
“I think our future is bright. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re back in this moment next year.”
Like I said Auburn should have a great year next year…they may be back in the SECCG, but I’ll be fighting tooth and nail to get our Hogs there as soon as possible.
I agree with everyone who says his language was geared to force Auburn to up their offer. He signaled to them in every way possible he wants to stay but if they don’t come with a good enough offer he might leave. Does it mean he MIGHT come to Arkansas? Yeah, but that’s not what’s going to happen. He’s signing an extension. I’m ready for him to do it so those who have this teenage-girl type crush on him will let it go. I hope we’ll hire someone we can all get behind & who’ll bring us a lot of success. (And that won’t be Kiffin.)
Let’s be honest, Malzahn would have divided the fan base. Those of us that don’t like Malzahn, but love the Razorbacks, would have accepted and supported a Malzahn hire. Kiffin is the best option for the Hogs. I hope, if he’s hired, you’ll support him out of your love for the Razorbacks.
