There was a little confusion today on how much Arkansas would owe Long. He will be paid $1 million per year through the end of his contract in June 2022, including pro-rated amounts for any partial years.
Based on rough estimates, he will be owed around $4.56 million.
Is there a duty to mitigate damages? In other words, is there an obligation on his part to seek gainful employment in his profession? Or can he just retire if he wanted to and collect the million per year? The reason I ask is that his compensation at Arkansas was probably pretty competitive in the market. If he were to get another job at another school, then he might get paid a million per year there too, in which case he is essentially working for nothing if he can sit at home and collect his buyout money.
The obvious answer to the blank is HDN. That would create some type of crazy vortex that would blow people’s mind, and probably the entire athletic department. Better yet, what if it was Nolan, who hired Gus to spite HDN?
