Long's buyout

There was a little confusion today on how much Arkansas would owe Long. He will be paid $1 million per year through the end of his contract in June 2022, including pro-rated amounts for any partial years.

Based on rough estimates, he will be owed around $4.56 million.

Matt:

Is there a duty to mitigate damages? In other words, is there an obligation on his part to seek gainful employment in his profession? Or can he just retire if he wanted to and collect the million per year? The reason I ask is that his compensation at Arkansas was probably pretty competitive in the market. If he were to get another job at another school, then he might get paid a million per year there too, in which case he is essentially working for nothing if he can sit at home and collect his buyout money.

Yes, there are offset provisions.

If I am Long I pull a Nolan coaching the Panamanian national team and take a job gratis…

I wonder if the Long money is coming from the Foundation or from the Athletic Department.

I would think Long will get another gig before too long, plenty of places looking. But he does not have to be in any hurry.

I’m pretty sure that all university buyouts come from fundraising arms.

How about this scenario:

  1. Auburn hires Jeff Long as its new athletic director.
  2. Arkansas hires ______ as its new athletic director who immediately fires Bret Bielema.
  3. Jeff Long hires Bret Bielema as Auburn’s new football coach.
  4. Arkansas hires Gus Malzahn as its head football coach.

I just need someone to fill in the blank for #2

The obvious answer to the blank is HDN. That would create some type of crazy vortex that would blow people’s mind, and probably the entire athletic department. Better yet, what if it was Nolan, who hired Gus to spite HDN?

Aloha,

How I greatly enjoy the humor on this board!!! What a riot!
