Just an hypothetical here “what if”…many times we will hear of an ultimatum to a coach…fire some assistants, do this, do that to keep your job…
If it came down to it and CBB were told to change his offensive style to a more wide-open, spread style (in this day and age) or you will be gone next year…do you think he would do it or would he go down with the ship?
No way would I want an AD doing that. Hire the coach and let him coach. If you want something different, hire somebody else. I don’t think the style has anything to do with where they are right now. If you don’t have Oline, it does not matter what sort of X & Os you might want. That is football 101. Besides, up until the recently, the big problem has been with a very leaky defense.
Realize, your question was hypothetical, and the answer would be interesting, but I just don’t see that happening.
I don’t know if the AD or higher-ups would insist on a change of style, but it is definitely possible that they would insist on staff changes. CBB seems to be loyal to his assistants, so would he say no and suffer the consequences, or would he oblige and keep his job? I could see that going either way.
He better do what gives him the best chance to win! No AD needs to be telling a coach in any sport how to do his or her job? If that’s happening you need a new coach.
I’ve rarely seen that work. If an AD tried that, it would generally backfire. I don’t know what Bret would do, but I wouldn’t force it on him. Frank did that a few times. Generally, it was a bad idea and ended up going badly.
i guess at wisconsin in might be an irritation but still could make some sense… same as when we had Frank Broyles as our AD
might not be a good thing but i am sure football advice and maybe even the occasional ultimatum
occasionally has been issued from an exhead coach AD
rumors are that that sort of “meddling” caused CBB to go looking for another job when he was at UW
i am sure it would be an irritation
but
definitely depends on the AD
