Offer Jeff Long an opportunity to have a moderated chat with WholeHogSports members.
The worst thing in the world for Long to do would be to have an all-comers chat on Twitter or Facebook. But if you could control access and control the quality of questions, I bet members here would love to get some answers straight from the boss.
You could do it live, or submit questions in advance and let Long take his time answering them, then post it all in one blap.
Just an idea. Personally, I find it frustrating that I can’t even send the guy an e-mail. He killed his public e-mail address a while back.
Why do you have to use email to communicate? Write him a letter. I still write letters. I still get them. I think most people are too lazy to type a letter and go to the post office to buy a stamp. I don’t get it.
I’ve always taken more time when it’s a hard copy, a true letter. I doubt many people write them any more, but I do. I write thank you notes and have my own stationary. It’s impactful. Try it.
Email leaves less of a carbon footprint for those of us who are so inclined to think that way. There is also no chance that an email gets lost in the mail as a letter may. It is also cheaper.
Just a few reasons besides laziness as you mentioned.

[/quote] I am with you, Clay. Of course you and I share a similar era and upbringing. I still write letters, notes etc. One would really be amazed the impact of the personal effort. While I think or hope, many are purposeful with their posts, tweets, whatever; writing a letter or note is very much a process where words are chosen carefully and effort is made to ensure accuracy and relevance to the intended recipient. I would hope that most of us would not say in a letter things that come too natural on this board, myself included.
I get letters from young people, too. I do not think it’s a lost art. I think some just don’t do it that way because they are lazy. Sorry, just me. I get letters and thank yous at my house once a week. I’m not saying they are all to me, but we get them (my wife and I). Some are from people under the age of 30. Some under the age of 20.
And, since maybe not everyone is writing letters these days, those that do get noticed by me and everyone else who is getting them. I bet Jeff Long notices them.
Aside from the debate between letters and emails I believe the suggestion of a moderated chat is a good one. Certainly there are lots of questions surrounding the athletic department’ major sports programs and Long’s responses to pre-screened questions would be interesting to see.
A written note is very impactful and glad to see others are still taking the time. When you have a birthday or other special occasion for a friend or relative send them a hand-written note instead of a Hallmark Card and see how fast they thank you. No one throws away a written note.
I’ve read the tweets directed at him. If they were directed at me I’d be getting snippy too. A lot of ADs won’t engage the public like that. The just-retired AD at Bama didn’t have a Twitter account, although his replacement does. LSU’s AD doesn’t either.
With Tweets, of course, he can selectively respond. He’s not forced to respond.
I do think it’s pretty ridiculous to spin that the UA is “best in athletics.” We are not the best in athletics. Not even close. Not in the sports that draw big fan interest. This only reinforces my view that Long thinks UA fans are a bunch of idiots. It is frustrating. But whatever.
I think one must be an idiot to take a tweet that congratulates our student athletes on their academic and athletic achievements. He didn’t say football or basketball was #1 in the SEC. If one takes that from the tweet, then they have an agenda.
Yeah, genius, I have an agenda. I don’t really like Jeff Long and the way he runs the athletic department. How about that? Keep digesting the propaganda. I’m sure you are quite happy with the success of the Razorbacks these days.
And, by the way, I didn’t say one word about the academics. That’s great. But at some point, somebody needs to focus on winning up there. Winning on the field and on the court. And in the only two or three sports most people care about.
Jeff Long does need to be concerned with the product on the field–especially in the money-making sports. That said, he also has to be concerned about facilities and academics. The facilities are as good as anybody can ask. Recruits are always impressed. APR numbers determine the potential loss of scholarships and more as our basketball program struggled with (I think) prior to CMA’s arrival. So, it’s good the academics are responding. Maybe, now, we can see on-field/court results soon.
