The rich just keep getting richer! Hard to close the gap when they’re bringing in that kind of talent.
I kind of thought we’d atleast be mentioned with some top 100ish OL with Pittman. So far, not the case. Maybe next year.
Alabama’s class is really impressive, as usual.
Business as usual
4-20, you’ve got to have some results to show these top 100 OL. Sam is a great coach, and recruiter, but he’s the head man now, so it will take a different angle on getting them to campus. As we always say, winning cures many ails.
True. Guess we will see if they can win or not.
Money talks. Cannot believe they did not go to Texas
Aloha,
Slightly off topic…with a pair of teenagers, I can attest that the world of social media has propelled young people’s concern of self-esteem, popularity and social status to all-time heights.
In general, the vast amount of young adults are obsessed with how their peers think of them. OBSESSED! This directly relates to recruiting. Their are always exceptions, but to be recruited and accept a scholarship offer from a big time nationally ranked school is the pinnacle of social status.
They are literally shouting on their social media, “Look at me, look at me…I’m going to Alabama!”
It says a LOT about the nation’s top recruits who select a college based on what’s personally best for them and has nothing to do with their social status. They are very self confident and well grounded.
GHG!
No doubt winning is important… we’ve done very well considering how awful we’ve been. Will have to bring in as good or better talent then the three we bringing in this year
It’s both disheartening and incredibly motivating. There are three tiers that I’m using to judge our progress.
- Competitive
- Winner
- Champion
We know that a good coach can compete with quality 3* athletes. However, competing usually entails beating the opponents you’re absolutely supposed to beat and losing an occasional game to a good conference foe that you probably should have beaten. You stay competitive with the big boys for the first half of a game, but they usually pull away in the second half because of the difference in depth. We’ve hovered in this zone before, and we can get there again.
The real question then becomes is Pittman a guy who can break through the competitive ceiling to get to the next level where you are a winner–a team like a Wisconsin/Oregon. They routinely land in the upper tier of their conferences; no one is surprised when they pull a 4* kid; and they are a genuinely scary game for the potential champions. Every season, they believe that they can compete for a title, but they still usually lose a game or two–one of which is usually a bit of a head-scratcher. And they don’t always play for a conference championship. But, it’s still always an exciting year.
After that, you’re at champion level. I’ll just say that history seems to indicate that you need 4 and 5* talent to get and stay here. But, we won’t even talk about that right now. Let’s just crawl our way back to competitive.
Good post.
Yes, history does indicate that to reach the champion level, you need to be recruiting more 4 stars than 3 stars, on average. In the SEC to win consistently, you need to be recruiting at the champion level, and have good coaching. I posted a link on here last year that broke down the last 15 or so national championships, and all but one had a team with 50% or more 4 stars on the roster, the outlier was Clemson in their first NC, and they had something like 47%.
Would you rather have three seasoned strong 3* juniors or three relatively weak 5* freshmen on the starting line? Bama lost their OL to the draft last year and are promising much playing time to these 5*s. For the next year don’t you think our seasoned DL can slip by these inexperienced super highly talented OL of Bama?
It’s a good question. I’ve got two honest answers for you.
1)I’d rather have seasoned three star guys for moving us into the competitive tier, which is why I’m pretty excited about this year.
- When—not if, but when, we move into the winner/champion tier, I’d rather have the 4 and 5* kids because it means you’ve already established the type of culture that if you have a weak 4 or 5* kid, it’s the next man up. And that next man is usually a 4 or 5* kid who has been on the team, in practices, playing with the best and—although not NFL draftable—is good enough to start. You see this with Bama, Clemson, Ohio St., etc.
The rich just keep getting richer! Hard to close the gap when they’re bringing in that kind of talent. Nothing against you personally but it’s difficult for me to understand your logic sending that info to whole HOG sports

Um, to whom was you speaking?
I had the same question, tusch!
Either way, I’m not worried about Bama’s recruiting.
I’m worried about US. The Ole Mrs, missstake, misery, a&m, South Carolina.
Let’s get in the top 1/2 of the league before we worry about the pinnacle.
If that ever happens, I’d LOVE to have to worry about bama’s recruiting, lol
GHG
Wasn’t any logic at all it was me just being ticked off at them getting all those great OL…
Agree 100%. Get to the top half of the SEC and then we can begin to make some real noise.
