i totally agree about him having breakout speed, you can tell he hits the LOS much quicker than anybody we have.now with that being said that sometimes can be a bad ting because he doesnt always see creases but if he ever hits the crease just right ala Dmac he will housecall it IMO.
I do too, but he hasn’t showed it on game day yet. I will be more than pleased if that changes Saturday night. I agree that he’s dancing a bit at the line. Alex Collins was the best back I’ve ever seen at UA who could hesitate at the line, then find the crease and hit it. The best NFL comparison to that style I could make would be Barry Sanders. DW has not shown Barry Sanders-style running yet.
Snoutoff, I expressed my opinion on the weather. Could be right, could be wrong. You’re stating Whaley’s breakaway speed as a fact. He may indeed have that kind of speed, but we haven’t seen it yet. Perhaps we would have found out Saturday if he doesn’t trip at the line on that well-blocked play.
I’m totally in agreement with the measured development of DW. The step from HS to the SEC is nearly infinite. The jump-cut that broke you loose in HS simply puts you closer to the OLB in this man’s league. One cut and stick your foot in the ground. I think DW is going to be a worthy addition to the great chain of Arkansas RBs. As a matter of fact, I can hardly tell RW and DW apart.
The main thing that makes me think he plays more is Reggie Mitchell is getting more comfortable with him being able to pick up blitzes. They didn’t feel the need to sub him out in pass situations against Texas State and he did well. Obviously A&M is a different animal, but it sounds like he’s progressing to where they feel better about him being out there.
I noted in the film review and Enos mentioned it today, it seems like he’s hitting the hole full speed, intent on breaking the big run and not setting up his blocks with the patience Rawleigh is showing. A lot of that is experience and you’d think he gets better.
He will not have a break-out game until he waits a second for the hole to open up. He hits the LOS too fast and the holes are not there yet. He had a few good 5-6 yard runs but he could get so much more.
Nobody would love that more than me — and the Whaley family. But I think it makes you realize how special ACollins actually was — and I missed that myself. Thought that was normal, but it is not. Whaley may be a better RB than Alex, but he does look like a rookie— and AC really never did — only got better. May be a product of the OL actually and we have taken a step back there.
dm…you mention Alex being special, and he was. From day 1 he had 3 things that are rare: 1. an ability to read the situation and read his blocks. Clay described it as him as crafty. He was. 2) Terrific vision. As good as I have ever seen. 3) an un-godly ability to cut, on one leg, almost like a spider. Just totally change direction. Drastic. I still remember him making two guys miss with jump cuts against Florida as a freshman.
The only thing Collins lacked…and it was harped on over and over and over by the fanbase on the radio on on message boards…was top-end speed. “Not as fast as Dmac or Knile” was stated a zillion times. That and maybe the day in day our work ethic JWill had (and that’s only based on what I read).
And he wasn’t (and isn’t) as fast as those dudes. But had attributes they didn’t have. We shall see how far he goes in the NFL.
Whaley on the other hand can really move…and that’s based on his 100 time in HS AND the eye test. And he can cut. And he’s thick. We shall see about the rest.
Whaley definitely has shown he has speed and will. To improve our offense for the SEC push, we need to add QB option run, keep, throw, plus Whaley. We must have added weapons to succeed in SEC play.
Man, I don’t know that I agree with that, but respect your opinion. We are running a Pro Set, and live or die, just accept that is what CBB lives by. You obviously don’t agree ---- and would rather run Gus’s offense or Ga. Tech or am I misunderstanding? Have you watched AR? Allen is not an option QB.
I know we have some RPO in our offense. That could be what he is talking about.
See, Immediately I like you. You mediate people. and that is a talent. That’s a good spin.
