Sitting here watching USC and Ohio State game and noticing all the buckeye stickers on the helmets, I’m personally not a fan of them and knew that Bielema liked them, was just wondering if anyone noticed if Coach Morris had used them at SMU or not?
Yes, SMU had helmet stickers under Morris. In fact, the stickers covered the side of some players’ helmets.
Before Bielema, Petrino was a proponent of them. Most coaches are. I suspect they aren’t going away anytime soon.
they have been around for years. If I remember right, the last couple years Frank was coach, we had them then.
How would anyone know if we had them last season? It’s not like there was a lot of sticker earning going on.
I think it’s player driven, like names on the backs, military or whatever-they-call-them uniforms, and even the age-old act of awarding game balls. Recruits and current players envision their being recognized, and being unique.
I was a manager on my high school team 40+ years ago. We were using helmet stickers even then, and I was the one who decided who got them (the players didn’t know that, or they probably would have been lobbying/threatening me to get them). So that had nothing to do with recruiting, but it did have something to do with recognizing accomplishment.
By the way, names on the backs are largely TV driven. Makes it easier for viewers to identify the players. Nowadays, though, the name is often covered by the dreadlocks.
If Morris decides to go with helmet stickers ( with the AD permission ) … easiest way to do it would be if the player actually played in a game throughout his college career, that the team won. Giving out a sticker for just being there or recovering a fumble etc etc doesn’t work. Stickers just for those that were actually in the game that was won works. If stickers are just being handed out for participating and not winning then it becomes just like the trophy’s that are handed out in pee wee league. earn the sticker or don’t get one. It might make those on the 2nd string actually play harder.
I really don’t think Connor McPherson, to name one career Hog benchwarmer, ever got a helmet sticker. You have to do something in a game. May be something that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet, a great block, something like that.
If you go for the shiny helmets like Louisville, stickers kinda defeat the purpose.
Why do folks worry about stuff like this?
I was just curious if we would continue to use them, I personally like the cleaner look without them, but see where it could be used as motivation or just a way to recognize players performance, I hadn’t thought about that side of it
Coaches who use them have their own categories for what earns a helmet sticker. I thought CBB had some interesting ways for players to earn them, but I didn’t really like the front-facing Hogs on the stickers. Prefer we stay with the side view. I don’t mind the stickers. In fact, I think it’s neat to see how decorated the helmets can get as the season goes along.

[/quote]I agree about the front-facing things. I see no reason to put red wolves on Razorback helmets.
Boredom.
