As you said, he has been in a slump and his defense is average at third. They subbed him for Kenley late in two games last week. They like Kenley’s defense.
Is shaddy better at third than gates? Already has an error and just missed a ball over the bag. And to add insult to injury, rindyl once again can’t hold the lead. Tied in the ninth. They have a man on third. 2 outs.
I started to post something earlier about how much Shaddy’s defense has improved over the past few weeks. Then as you point out he had the one error & other miss at third. Both were tough plays, but both could have been game changers. If he makes either play, I doubt we’d have needed the 10th inning. Still, I don’t want to be too hard on him. It’s a new position for him.
As for Gates, I know he’s slumping, but Kenley is pretty much an automatic out. I won’t question DVH, but it’s still surprising to me. Williams played pretty well tonight. That’s encouraging.

[/quote]Actually, NEA, Shaddy has played quite a bit of 3rd base at Arkansas. In fact, he was switched from there to 2nd this season, but he has played some 3rd even this year. He’s just bad defensively at 3rd. But we really don’t have a good option there . . . among players that have at least ONE hit this season.
I know what you’re saying about Kenley, but Gates is probably something like 2 for his last 35 at bats (just a guestimate). He’s in a terrible slump.
I didn’t remember him playing much at third this year. Now that you mention it, I do recall him there last year. 'Course I’ve done a pretty good job of putting last year out of my mind.
I’m disappointed in Gates. After he came back after his injury everyone thought he’d be a big plus for the team.

later in the game, coach replaced shaddy with gates at third and moved shaddy back to second. shaddy has been fine for the most part at second. proves the point that gates is better defensively at third. good move in my opinion.
Is Hunter Wilson out for the year?

I don’t think he’ll play again this year. He should qualify for a redshirt.
Hunter Wilson will qualify for a medical redshirt. I think third base is much more difficult to play in certain situations than second. It’s more reaction than anything. And, I think there is a feel that comes with time. Second base doesn’t seem to happen as fast. Yes, there is the double play combinations that are tough to learn at second, but Shaddy has done that all year. I think putting him back at third in the middle of a game is tough, but you want to keep him on the field because of that bat.
