Take away the white towel and replace with a pepsi AND Jerry Tarkanian was possibly more offensive-oriented than defensive but I see glimpses/phases of the Running Rebels morphing on the hill. Anyone else?
I do not believe that coaches thought Tarkanian was more offensive minded. His teams played hard-nosed defense. He wanted to push tempo, but I thought the way they played defense at both Fresno and UNLV was terrifc. They ran, but they ran off defensive stops. Loyola Marymount played offense with no defense, but Tark’s teams were tough, tough defensive teams.
They ran, but they ran off defensive stops.
Very true.
I know Jerry ran an excellent program and his players gave their all.
Wasn’t he the guy who said to Nolan, “Get some men” IIRC that was after a game in which they did plain over power the Hogs.I think we got them later.
They played hard. Now did he break the rules? Probably so. But I do not think they actually caught him. He sure didn’t think they did. Nolan thought Tark was a heckuva defensive coach.

Larry Johnson, who was a hoss, is the one who said that.
That was Larry Johnson barking at Nolan during my Freshman year in college. And Nolan did
Thanks, guys, UNLV was good at that time.
Yesssss and I was so infuriated with tark after he said that. And backing up his claim made it worse.
Always in the top 5 or #1 for about a ten year span seems like.
Rumored that UNLV players had plenty of perks in Vegas during the Tark years.
Tark was a heck of a Coach though.
You’re right twood LJ the Hoss and not Tark. Either way, and I think that very game was in '90 or '91 and omg did I get bent out of shape during that game.Silly now, looking back.
I recall some of those rumors.
Probably true.
Not called sin city for nothing. lol
I view those UNLV teams in the same light as SMU in the 80’s. Some of those guys took a paycut when the went pro
I would say you’re assumption were spot on.
We never got them later, because we lost a stupid game to a Kansas team we were better than in the Elite 8. I would have loved to see the rematch, but that game is lost to history. That Vegas team was the best team I ever saw, but that Arkansas team was the best team we’ve ever had.
I thought we beat them the next year or maybe two years later, regular season game. Didn’t we?
When Corliss made his presence known.
No. They went downhill rapidly after they threw that game to Duke…a team they beat by 30 the year before. Fortunately, we stayed the course and won it all in 1994.
I was at that game and I meet LJ at a CES show in Vegas a few years ago and asked him if that rumor was true. He laughed and said it was. He loved poken the bear as he said it. We also talked about the Todd Day swing and miss and LJ said he would have broke him like a twig which I have not doubt of. Said he loved Nolan and was happy when we won the Natty. We must have talked for 20 mins and even got a picture somewhere of the moment.
