Our pitching relief (Delce) in games 2-3 at Missouri got waxed. What happened there? Should we have just left the starting pitching in?
Dunno, probably need to add another pitcher.
Chenise Delce is our best pitcher, and was the SEC pitcher of the year last season. Courtney has used her in relief numerous times for the last two years. She has had 28 relief appearances and 9 saves as a Hog. This weekend she didn’t get the job done in relief, after she pitched a two-hit shutout on Friday. It happens. Specifically she gave up three dingers, which brought her season HR total to 15. She only allowed 11 last year in more appearances, although her ERA this year is better.
It also should be noted that most of the rest of our pitching staff (including the starters Saturday and Sunday at Misery) are freshmen. Saturday the starter went 4.2 innings, Delce had to pitch the last 3. Sunday we went freshman-freshman-freshman-Delce, and Delce went 1.2 innings then.
The way each game was going, I felt as if Courtney’s best option was to go to Delce. It had worked all year in similar situations.
She just happened to leave several pitches too far over the plate. I think it was a case of her location simply being off for two days of the weekend. It happens.
She was sharp on Friday.
Pitching has been this team’s strong suit, so I would not worry too much about one weekend. I am interested to see how they respond, though.
