Pure speculation, of course - but, very entertaining.
I’m among those who hopes we can find some way to win 2 of our last 3 games, go Bowling, and keep CBB one more year . . . even though I don’t think we can.
If we cannot, the outcome of this speculative article would work for me - though I don’t see Long getting fired.
However I don’t think A&M has a snowballs chance in hell at getting Jimbo Fisher.
Just curious why you say that? Is it as simple as saying that - in general - A&M is not going to hire a coach away from Florida State?
IN GENERAL - I’d agree with that . . . as long as FSU WANTS to keep the coach. But both sides have been cooling on each other the last year or two. Jimbo may be looking for someplace to land, and A&M wouldn’t be a bad opportunity if that’s what he’s thinking. His success at FSU has created a beast, and the beast must be fed. The kind of season they are having can lead to frustration on both sides (as we are finding out for ourselves!).
Here’s an article on why Fisher might leave FSU from last year, when he was in play to replace Miles at LSU. Of course, there are some differences between A&M and LSU - but more similarities . . . facilities, fertile recruiting base, funds to hire assistants, etc.
I personally think the only way jimbo leaves FSU is if he gets fired, and he’s not getting fired.
Why would he rather stay than go to TAMU?
Well… for starters tAMU might recruit well, but they have horrible program history as far as winning. FSU is a much better program, tradition, and in a much easier to place to get to the play off. If he left FSU I do not think he would go to the SEC west, now Florida or tennessee? Maybe one of those two, I still doubt it. FSU is one of the best jobs in the country, in a desirable conference. TAMU would be a downgrade, big time.
Let me be clear on one thing; I’m NOT “prediciting” that Fisher will come to the Aggies. I’m just saying it isn’t as outlandish as some make it out to be. In other words, it wouldn’t shock me if he did.
Remember that we are looking at him from the “outside”. Do you remember how most everyone else in the SEC was telling Arkansas fans they were crazy to put heat on HDN when he was here? To them (outside), it looked like he was a great fit here, did more with less, etc. They couldn’t understand why any of us would want to get rid of him. Indeed, Ole Miss was giddy when the “stole” him from us!
In the same way, Arkansas fans generally don’t know squat about the dynamic of the FSU coach’s relationship with his BOT and fans. After a coach has been somewhere for a while (this his 8th year as HC at Florida State), sometimes the fans become restless and want change. And sometimes, the coach becomes frustrated with a lack of commitment to improve facilities or pay assistants or whatever, and just decides moving on and taking on a new challenge is the best move. Look at Urban Meyer!
Also, remember that Fisher has spent a long time in the SEC West - 6 years as a coordinator at LSU, 5 more coaching QB’s at Auburn. I’m sure he’s confident that he would be able to compete at the highest level in that division - or anywhere else. And despite what you think, and my general opinion of the Aggies, I do believe most informed outsiders view it - today - as a place where someone can win big.
I wouldn’t be surprised if LSU pulled the plug on O if they thought Jimbo was in play. They better make sure they have him locked up first so they don’t end up with egg on their face like the last time they thought they had him.
