This is what Pittman said he was told. This is from Arkansas’ postgame radio show:
“They just said it was a fumble, a backward pass, but they blew the whistle before we recovered the ball so they couldn’t review it, I guess. That’s the explanation I got.”
On the postgame Zoom call he seemed to contradict the radio statement:
Pittman: “I was told it wasn’t a backward pass."
Reporter: “So you were told it was not a backward pass?”
I will always remember this game as one that the SEC officials flat out took from us. There is no way around it. They blew the call. It cost us the game. And I don’t wanna hear how we shouldnt have chased the points. Or that we made mistakes. All that is true.
But we still WIN if the officials simply make the proper call.
Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the explanation was that the refs called a live ball dead before Arkansas landed on it. Thus the play was dead.

Then why didn’t the ref give that explanation to the tv camera?
Apparently the refs initially screwed up the play by blowing the whistles before the play was actually dead per them not realizing the ball spiking was actually a fumble.
In covering-up their premature whistle blowing, refs made a 2nd bad call by giving the ball back to Auburn after they reviewed the play & in realizing their mistake. That assumes AR took physical possession of the ball after the fumble & AUB was not in a position to do so.
Arkansas was screwed over twice by the refs in a single play.
We screwed ourselves over by not getting 3 extra points & again by attempting two 2 point conversions to compensate.
As I understand it and what I saw on TV, the play was blown dead at the point of the backward lateral pass by the QB. I am unaware of anything the officials can legally do once the play is blown dead. Yes, they made a mistake blowing the play dead. In the NFL they let the play complete itself then review the play and make any changes as the review indicates. In this instance, the SEC officials blew the play dead without letting it play out and review after the play. It will be interesting to see how the SEC Conference handles this and what their official statement will be. I think the officials owe Sam and the Hogs a big one.
Let’s not forget we had the ball after the field goal miss with 2 minutes to go. All we had to do is run the clock out with one first down. The first play we go east and west and lose 2.
