I may have misunderstood Watson’s contract but didn’t the Browns and his agent negotiate a mere $1 million for this year knowing the suspension was coming? If so both parties should suffer some consequence.
His base salary for this year is veteran minimum of $1.03 million, plus the signing bonus. If the 6-game suspension holds, he loses about 35% of the salary but the bonus is not affected.
It’s not uncommon for NFL contracts to shift money from year to year in multiyear deals, suspension or not, because of salary cap considerations; they like to put big money later in the deal when the cap will presumably be higher. That bit some teams for the COVID year when the cap was not higher,
Anyone who thinks his agent didn’t set this contract up to lessen his lost $$$ , knowing he would be suspended is running fast and hard away from the truth.
