Nice to see blowout win but Austin still seemed to get hit or hurried way too much against lesser D talent.
Bigger concern to me is what appears to be lack of any QB depth.
Granted our second string guy is supposed to look like deer in headlights first time out and he did to me. Maybe not sure whether a deer or another animal just yet.
Even looked like he was uncomfortable in a helmut that didn’t quite fit.
In fairness of course was first time out but did not seem to have IT factor.
If we have had a QB transfer to SMU and USC kid not panning out, what is happening at that position?
Very concerned if Austin goes down due to spotty O line play, we may be very one dimensional at QB.
How is the freshman kid doing I wonder?
Hopeful for a lot of QB development and depth development fast as we get into SEC where one big ugly can take out a QB.
We appeared improved in the o-line although some of that might have been quality of opposition, but we all know it still needs to get better. I have no doubt it will.
As for Ty Storey, I think you’re being a bit too critical. It’s hard to determine “it” factor the first time out in mop-up role. Of course we’ll be in trouble if our starting QB goes down, but that’s true of just about every team. So what do we do to prepare? Exactly what CBB is doing. Bring the backup in during non-stressful times & let him get his feet wet before we toss him nto the deep end.
I agree with you that the Texas State game didn’t give us much of a picture for team analysis. That said, I think the coaching (still searching) moves with the OL and my prior thoughts about lack of QB and RB depth has left me with a not so comfortable feeling heading into SEC play.
There is no such thing as depth at QB anymore. No QB will be patient enough to wait. They will transfer to another school in a heartbeat. Tell me which team in the SEC is satisfied right now with their QB depth?
As far as backup QB goes, Cole Kelley is much more physically gifted than Ty and appears to have the “it” factor. The only reason he isn’t the No. 2 is because he’s redshirting. If Austin went down with a serious injury and the season was still viewed as salvageable, I think there’s a decent chance Kelley is the starter.
The staff loves him. The players like playing with him. If he keeps developing, I expect him to be the backup next year and the post-AA starter.
Obviously none of this matters this year if Austin stays healthy. Just saying the QB cupboard isn’t bare.
We have plenty of back up QB’s. Only a couple months ago most of this board was drooling over the QB depth on hand. Ok we lost one to transfer, as most on here expected.
Now I don’t want to think what might happen if AA goes down. But I do remember when Ryan Mallet went down against top ranked Auburn and everyone gasped until Tyler Wilson threw that first laser for a TD.
And please, I don’t want to hear it was because Bobby Petrino was the head coach then.
Whomever the backup QB is, I thought TX State was a good time to at least let them throw a pass. In this case, It was Ty. I am definitely not a coach, but seemed like a missed opportunity. If our line continues to improve, we might be okay, but if not and you think AA is not going to miss a play with this line giving a few free shots a game at the QB ---- I hope you are right. The O line has to be a concern next week.
I told a friend that there would be someone on the board who would not be able to enjoy the weekend fully without expressing concern over something despite the 42-3 rout
Heck, we gotta turn the page, lol. You aren’t listening to the coaches , ha, ha.
If we can run the ball against A&M like AU was able to do, then I think our Oline will be ok. The run blocking is our strength on Oline at this time. We should have played Ty Storey a lot more.
But he did throw a pass. I would rather see the backups run the whole offense rather than playing like it would hurt somebody’s feelings if we made a first down. If opponents are going to put nine in the box against our backups, gotta do something. They are begging us to throw.
Just to clarify what came up on a different thread- we have tons of QB depth, but we are very thin in experience at QB. If Austin goes down we are sending in someone that has a couple snaps to their name if any.
I am more concerned about our propensity of letting the feet off the gas pedal, which gives the other team life while our defense tires.
