I’m not the AD or a BOT member, but I compared Sampson to Anderson and didn’t think he was an upgrade.

I stretched out Mike’s 17 years to project what his 26 would look like. It looked like this:

573 wins (.649 win%), 14 NCAAT, 3 SS or better

I decided to do that with the other coaches I’ve seen mentioned, stretching each out over 26 years. Here is how I would have ranked them:

Few - 750 wins (82%), 26 NCAAT (100%), 12 SS or better (45%)
Beard - 682 wins (75%), 20 NCAAT (75%), 10 SS or better (50%)
Buzz - 550 wins (62%), 20 NCAAT (75%), 10 SS or better (50%)
Thad Matta - 673 wins (74%), 20 NCAAT (76%), 9 SS or better (42%)
Eric Musselman - 715 wins (76%), 20 NCAAT (75%), 7 SS or better (33%)
Jaime Dixon - 644 wins (71%), 20 NCAAT (75%), 5 SS or better (25%)
Sampson - 541 wins (66%), 15 NCAAT (57%), 4 SS or better (27%)
Marshall - 618 wins (72%), 17 NCAAT (67%), 2 SS or better (14%)
Mick Cronin - 593 wins (68%), 18 NCAAT (69%), 2 SS or better (9%)
Matt McMahon - 566 wins (67%), 13 NCAAT (50%), 0 SS or better (0%)
Earl Grant - 525 wins (61%), 5 NCAAT (20%), 0 SS or better (0%)
Porter Moser - 433 wins (52%), 2 NCAAT (6%), 0 SS or better (0%)

It’s looking more and more like on HY’s list it was

Beard (maybe, we will never know)
Sampson
Musselman

I think Sampson is a pretty good coach but I don’t think hiring a guy who will be 64 (or close thereto) when he starts his first season is a bad idea. I will be 70 soon and can tell that the downward slide at 64 near unavoidable.

A younger guy is a better bet. When has the old man strategy ever been successful?

Trump?
