Oh, yes. I even liked it when Texas jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning because I had confidence that the Hogs would come back. There is nothing like a little tease.
There were two UT communications folks in the press box near me. They were so very quiet. That’s what happens when you know you are beaten before the start. That’s not how they were in the old days. Cocky or arrogant is the way I would describe the old sports information folks from the 80s. I know there was much respect for Jones Ramsey in the 60s and 70s, but not so much for the folks who followed him at Texas. Jones Ramsey was one of my dad’s best friends. He’d vacation at my dad’s house for a week every summer. Great guy. The next batch did their jobs but they enjoyed the winning a little too much. And, they were not very good losers, to be honest.
I’m sure the current Texas coach is very good. And, he should be able to get top players to Austin. But he has almost no pitching right now. It does not look like the same beast that I grew up watching. Baseball teams without pitching are not baseball teams. That’s where Texas is right now. It may be a different thing when the Hogs go to Austin next year. Who knows? Some of these young UT pitchers may find their way by the end of this season. Who knows?
All of this is to say that I enjoyed it.
Got to finish with this story. Daughter Sarah teaches third grade in Rogers. On Wednesday she took time to explain to her youngsters – most of whom can tell you who Messi is and don’t have a clue about any stars in MLB – about Arkansas playing Texas in baseball. She taught them the downward hook 'em sign. She said it’s the Texas logo turned upside down and that’s what we do in Arkansas.
One third grade boy was confused. She said it’s a Longhorn, but with the horns pointed down. He said, “Oh, yes, Miss Henry, that’s what I call the devil cow, horns down.” That’s a good one, IMO. The devil cow. Nothing like teaching them right.
I like it. Marty, take note. This is now a Devil Cow:
Devil horns. I like it.
I spent a week in Houston right after the Texas Bowl blowout. Had lunch with one of my guys and his son. Both HUGE shorthorn fans. The dad was gracious but the son kept going on about CBB and his “borderline erotic” comment.
I just smiled and enjoyed the moment.
I’ve been calling it the unhookem sign, but Devil Cow works too! I took two foam fingers from the Texas Bowl with me to the games this week. Held together and upside down, they made an impressive Devil Cow.

I have heard the song " Born to be wild"
but I was born to hate Texas! That’s what I miss about the SWC. Every game we played we had a chance to beat a team from Texas.
I do not think we were born that way. I think we were trained and raised the right way. It’s about raising your kid to know the difference between right and wrong. The Devil Cow is just plain wrong.
I was raised right.
Devil Cow is right … hook ‘em is WRONG.
I love it!!! Wooo Piggg! Really enjoyed this thread…
