Hayden got hit hard on the third series. I thought he might have undergone some concussion protocol and that’s why he didn’t come back into the game.
That he was healthy and didn’t play is baffling. It reminds me of the 2005 Vanderbilt game when Felix Jones was left on the sideline after a big opening game.
Felix wasn’t the only one. Both he and DMac had ONE carry each in that game, after combining for over 200 yards in their respective debuts the week before.
Never understood that decision.

Who was the HC? 'nuff said.

You really had to bring that memory back.
I have tried to forget those Games.
In my eyes, Chase, T.J., Jordan, Jarrod and De’Vion are the best athletes/playmakers on the offense.
That’s 3 true freshmen, a redshirt freshman and a sophomore with limited experience, so it puts the staff in an interesting position because it’s apparent they need athleticism on the field, but those guys are the same ones who’ll be prone to mental busts.
The final Bret quote in my story is: “The ability to make a play when it matters is really big." To me, that means that even though guys like La’Michael and to a lesser extent Deon have been on campus and know the offense, they need players who can get open and make plays against good defenses.
Obviously it sounds like they want Chase to be involved. I think T.J. (elusiveness, quickness) and Jordan (speed) both can really help the pass game if they earn enough of the staff and Austin’s trust.
Not playing Chase Hayden was just plain dumb.
We will see if the staff puts all of this talk into action. I won’t hold my breathe. The next time we are in the red zone I look forward to seeing the same safety blitz and RB tackled for a loss.
I still wonder if they will make changes on the Oline!
Yes, I’ve heard a lot of talk Sundays through Fridays that doesn’t show up on Saturdays.
But, let’s try and be fair about it.
We all know that one of the worse things you can do is put a kid out in a game situation before he’s ready for it. That doesn’t mean they have to sit on the bench all season in deference to upperclassmen that aren’t as talented. But, it probably does mean that it makes sense to start the season with people who HAVE been on the field and sprinkle in the newcomers a little bit early, gradually giving them more time in the first few games. Put in a new RB, for example, and have him miss a protection that get’s Austin smeared and causes a fumble, and everyone would be bitching because we can’t protect the QB (and probably blaming the OL, when it was a RB protection error). So, it’s hell if you do and hell if you don’t.
That’s where we are now. I’d bet that, whether we’d won or lost to TCU, we’d see more of those guys in the next 2 or 3 games regardless. Certainly, the loss put a spotlight on it.
Bigger Role? Chase Hayden was the best player of game #1. In game #2 the coaches gave him two touches the entire game. That is poor coaching any way you spin it!
I agree with Army Hog. We have heard all this before and nothing changes. TJ Hammonds should have been redshirted or played more last year. Every time the guy touches the ball he looks like he might go. How hard is it to split him out and throw him a short slant and let him go? Not very hard, but we don’t seem to get him the ball. Why can’t TJ return kickoffs. #13( call me Danny Ford) is too small and too timid on those kickoffs. You need a guy to run the kick back with his hair on fire.
So far, Williams and Hayden have been our best backs and Whaley has been the least effective. They need the bulk of the carries until Whaley gets it going.
I would replace #13 with D. Warren on KO return…I think he’s a big play waiting to happen.
I think you are right. I thought what Bret said about letting the position coach control the rotation was interesting. At some point the head coach or coordinator need to intervene during the game, in my opinion.
Furthers my question of what CBB actually does on the sideline. It’s very alarming that he doesn’t realize the best players are not being played. But is upset about it l, afterwards.
Rawliegh Williams’ was very missed on Saturday. His style of running was missing on Saturday–we have a talented group of RBs on the roster but none that have the running style of Rawliegh.
Agreed. Deon seems to pitter patter with the ball and his size makes him fairly easy for most teams to bring down if they get a hand on him. I get why De’Vion and Jarrod aren’t getting WR snaps at this point, but the return game seems like an easy way to get some of your young, explosive guys touches.
Its telling that Devwah doesn’t make the list of explosive players. That’s another kid that needs to bust out. I didn’t realize he’d been dinged in fall camp. Devwah is the most highly recruited running back we have had in recent memory. I don’t put alot of stock on rankings…but for those that do I’m pretty sure he was more highly rated than even Dmac coming in. I don’t know if he’s seeing things especially well…but I know he has size, speed, agility and a great attitude.
Devwah and Chase need to become a great 1-2 punch. Not good. Great.
But we also need to get people out of the box.
I think Whaley will again get most of the carries due to experience handling the rock and his blocking awareness. Hayden and Williams are to different backs from Whaley and will offer up a change of pace on certain downs will the ability to contribute mightily, I like the idea of Chase getting more carries right now and hope I feel the same way after the A&M game. Like many others I also believe TJ is under utilized and as the coaches admitted they have to cut down on using so many different players due to not getting consistency from your best players due to lack of game time plays.Hope to see a different team against Aggies !
