He is awesome. He’d be a superb hire. But I’m not sure he’d want to leave Dallas just yet. His son is one of the candidates to take over as QB next year at Highland Park for John Stephen Jones. They are pretty big into that program.
But I really don’t know. SMU could step up and pay him more if it needed to, as well.
No guarantee that he sees Arkansas as the kind of job like the rest of us view it. He is turning around SMU and may wait for a better opportunity in a couple of years.
Bruce Feldman has said this is not accurate and is not expected to interview with Tennessee.
It blows my mind that some dismiss Chad Morris bc “he’s in a weak conference” or “he has a losing record”. Look at the trajectory, where was that program when he took it over and where is it now? Look at the Texas connections, the Jones connections, and how he helped transform Clemson into a perennial national power. We would recruit Texas like we’ve never recruited it before.
Jackson, I’ve done a little research on our coaching candidates.
Since, many don’t count 2013 against Bret, I threw that year out. I’m going to put down Total Offense, Total Defense, (avg record), number of years. Not gonna put coach, I want y’all to rank these guys.
Here is Bret’s for comparison: 58,78, (7-6), 4 Years
Coach A: 39,69, (8-5), 4 Years
Coach B: 55,101, (5-7) 3 Years
Coach C: 23,86, (7-6), 4 Years
Coach D: 20, 60, (9-3), 2 Years
Coach E: 57, 34, (9-3), 2 Years
Coach F: 19, 25, (9-3), 1 Year
Coach G: 44, 22, (8-5), 4 Years
My answer to this is that Chad is 15yrs older, and essentially spent those years as a Texas HS coach where he’s developed an extensive network of contacts. Dabo Swiney made him the highest paid assistant in the country when he hired him from Tulsa and Chad was an integral part of transforming the Clemson program. He then took over a dying program that had withered under June Jones after he had some initial success. He’s rebuilt it with Texas kids and has a winning record in his 3rd season.
Nothing against Norvell, but the resume is thin and his age scares me. Maybe it would work out great but handing the keys to this program to a 34yr old is frightening.

I was all for Norvell because I figured that Chad Morris would go to Texas A&M. Chad Morris really pioneered the offense that Gus runs. That is who Gus learned a great bit of it from. Mike has only been a head coach for 2 years total. Chad put in many hours as a Texas high school coach. Ironically both Chad and Mike broke into college coaching at Tulsa under Todd Graham (also a former Texas HS coach) They may have even been on the initial staffs together. Chad built Tulsa and Gus went there and made it flourish. Chad then went to Clemson and built their offense before returning to Texas.
I think Mike is/will be a dynamic head coach. I think he is an excellent recruiter. Chad has connections all over the state of Texas and, at his age, Arkansas could be a destination job whereas Mike, he re-build and this takes off, could move on.
I think we all agree you have to have Texas connections to win at Arkansas. Not saying Mike doesn’t have them, we know Chad Morris does.
Been told that Chad Morris has expressed to Arkansas people that he’s not interested in our job. Seems he’s A&M or bust.
Surprising and disappointing, to me at least.
The other connection that hasn’t been mentioned much is Morris’s relationship with the Jones family. His son is John Stephen Jones’s backup at Highland Park and Morris has been recruiting him to SMU (as a walkon maybe since SJS is like 5’10). But what a couple of aces to have up your sleeve if you became the Arkansas coach, Jerry and Stephen Jones having your back.
The story is that while a high school coach in Texas, Chad Morris took his staff to Little Rock two weeks in a row to watch Malzahn’s team play in the state semifinals and state finals. He was impressed and eventually was able to convince Malzahn to teach him about some of the concepts. They never coached together.
As a side note about Arkansas candidates and Malzahn ties, he and Norvell were together at Tulsa.
